Republican Senator Says He'll Try to Have Schumer Censured for SCOTUS Threat
Article by Susan Jones in "CNS News":
(CNSNews.com) - Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) is calling for the censure of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) for Schumer's threatening comments directed at two Trump-appointed Supreme Court justices, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh.
"Now @chuckschumer is threatening Supreme Court Justices personally, to the point of implying their physical safety is endangered. Disgusting, shameful, and frankly, WEAK," Hawley tweeted on Wednesday.
"I would call on Schumer to apologize, but we all know he has no shame. So tomorrow I will introduce a motion to censure Schumer for his pathetic attempt at intimidation of #SupremeCourt," the senator said in a second tweet.
Over the years, the Senate has censured only nine of its members.
Schumer, speaking at a rally outside the Supreme Court on Wednesday, said: "I want to tell you, Justice Kavanaugh and Justice Gorsuch, you have unleashed a whirlwind, and you will pay the price,” Schumer said. “You won’t know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions.”
Schumer also tweeted on Wednesday:
"SCOTUS just heard the 1st big case on a woman's right to make her own health care decisions since Justices Kavanaugh & Gorsuch. It looks at 1 of 100s of draconian, anti-choice restrictions states tried to pass. We’re here to send a message: Not on our watch!"
The court is considering an abortion-related case -- June Medical Services LLC v. Russo. The question, according to Scotusblog, is whether Louisiana’s law requiring abortion doctors to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals conflicts with the court’s decision just four years ago in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt striking down a similar law in Texas.
In that earlier Texas case, Justice Anthony Kennedy -- now retired -- joined the court’s four liberal justices in concluding that the law made it harder for women to obtain abortions while not protecting pregnant women's health.
But with Kennedy gone from the court, the constitutionality of the Louisiana law could be decided by one of the conservatives now in the majority on the court.
