The Nimitz Enters the Chat: Carrier Strike Group Arrives in Caribbean As US-Cuba Tensions Increase

RedState

As tensions between the United States and Cuba heat up, the U.S. sent a message to our neighbor to the south in the form of the Nimitz Carrier Strike Group, comprising the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier and numerous support vessels. It arrived in the Caribbean this week, not far from the island nation. Although the deployment was planned long in advance, the timing of the arrival is nonetheless noteworthy.

If you are a member of the ruling Communist Party of Cuba, you might just be feeling pretty nervous about now.

I’m sure they aren’t liking seeing this dramatic show of force right on their doorstep, because the Nimitz group is nothing to play around with:

The Nimitz-class carrier is operating alongside its air wing — including F/A-18E Super Hornets, EA-18G Growlers and C-2A Greyhounds — as well as the USS Gridley, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, and the USNS Patuxent, a Henry J. Kaiser-class replenishment oiler, according to U.S. Southern Command, which oversees military operations in the region.

“USS Nimitz has proven its combat prowess across the globe, ensuring stability and defending democracy from the Taiwan Strait to the Arabian Gulf,” Southcom said on X.

Welcome to the Caribbean, Nimitz Carrier Strike Group!

The aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68), the embarked Carrier Air Wing 17 (CVW-17), USS Gridley (DDG 101) and USNS Patuxent (T-AO 201) are the epitome of readiness and presence, unmatched reach and lethality, and strategic advantage. This comes as the U.S. formally indicted Fidel Castro’s 94-year-old brother Raul on Wednesday for allegedly greenlighting the 1996 shoot‑down of two defenseless civilian aircraft operated by the Miami‑based exile group Brothers to the Rescue. Three Americans and one permanent resident were killed.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche put Cuban leaders on notice: "My message today is clear. The United States and President Trump does not and will not forget its citizens."

The Nimitz has a long and storied history:

Somewhere between Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro on May 10, the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz became the longest-serving flattop in Navy history.

USS Nimitz, which was commissioned on May 3, 1975, has been in active service for 51 years, longer than USS Enterprise.

Don’t tell Captain Kirk.

Trump has put the heat on the Cuban regime by cutting off their oil, slapping on sanctions, and even joking in early May that he might take over the country “immediately.” Meanwhile, Cuban-American Secretary of State Marco Rubio is a harsh critic of the communist government and would surely cheer on its demise.

It’s unclear whether any action is imminent, but if it is, the U.S. and the Nimitz look primed and ready.
