Trump Upsets Euroweenies: France's Macron Calls for Meeting of Panicking European Leaders

Ward Clark reporting for RedState

It seems our president has European leaders breaking out in the heebie-jeebies - maybe out of envy for, say, an actual strong leader who isn't Vladimir Putin? Now, French President Emmanuel Macron is gathering a conclave of Euro-leaders to discuss what to do next.

French President Emmanuel Macron has scheduled an "emergency meeting" for European leaders to discuss President Donald Trump, according to another European official.

According to Politico, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski alluded to the meeting at the Munich Security Conference on Saturday. Two EU officials told the outlet that the meeting would take place on Monday.

"I'm very glad that President Macron has called our leaders to Paris," Sikorski was quoted as saying, noting that the event would involve talking about the implications of Trump's actions "in a very serious fashion."

"President Trump has a method of operating which the Russians call razvedka boyem – reconnaissance through battle. You push and you see what happens, and then you change your position…And we need to respond," the Polish official added.

"Reconnaissance through battle," or as it's sometimes said, "to understand no man's land, you must explore it with bullets."

That's not exactly what President Trump is doing, of course. But he is tough, assertive, and casually disregards many of the accepted norms; for instance, he didn't hesitate to place buying Greenland on the table, which hasn't been an idea the American government has explored in quite a long while. It's also quite likely that his insistence that our fellow NATO members actually live up to their treaty obligations where defense spending is concerned has some of these people concerned. And, in exploring the various no man's lands of international affairs, he certainly doesn't hesitate to fire off some warning shots.

For example: Special Envoy Ric Grenell's trip to Venezuela, where following a quiet conversation with dictator Maduro, the socialist strong-man folded like a cheap suit and not only agreed to receive illegal immigrants from America back to Venezuela but also released six Americans who had been languishing in a Venezuelan jail.

The Polish foreign minister, we may note, was less than impressed with President Trump's predecessor.

Sikorski has not shied away from discussing American politics in the past. He previously compared President Biden's poor debate performance to the decline of ancient Rome, and once told MSNBC host Andrea Mitchell that Trump was "right" to say that NATO countries need to spend more on their own defense.

Where (thankfully) former President Biden is concerned, that's an apt comparison. Joe Biden was the typical product of an empire in decline: Weak, corrupt, venal, not particularly intelligent - and did I mention corrupt? The man was Caligula without the charisma; he was Nero without the musical talent.

No matter what one thinks of Donald Trump and his current administration, he proves that he's learned a thing or two from his first go-around. He always projected strength and confidence, but now he has learned how to put together a team that does likewise.

No wonder the leaders of Europe are a little nervous. President Trump is showing them up.

It will be fascinating to see what, if anything, of substance comes out of this meeting. Stay tuned!
