NEW ORLEANS, LA — Following a demoralizing loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX, news broke early Monday morning that the Kansas City Chiefs had moved quickly to fire their referees.

While the team's officials had performed well enough all season to contribute to a number of victories, the referees' inability to come through in the clutch when the team needed them the most led the Chiefs to believe a change needed to be made.

"They just weren't getting the job done, so we're making a change," said General Manager Brett Veach. "There are a lot of different positions on this team, and they all have a responsibility to do their jobs to help the team win. When one or more of the people in those positions don't perform up to expectations, it's tough to win. That's why we had no choice but to cut ties with our officiating crew. They had a good run for us, and we're sorry that it just didn't work out in the end. We wish them the best, and we'll be looking to add some new referees as we regroup for next season."

Head referee Ron Torbert expressed disappointment but understood the nature of the business. "When you don't perform, you end up on the chopping block," he said. "This is a results-driven game. We showed up strong all season long and into the playoffs, but we didn't help our team win last night. That's on us."

At publishing time, Chiefs scouts were said to already have their eyes on referees they may be interested in adding through free agency and the draft to come back strong next fall.
