Hunter Biden Refuses to Appear for Deposition, Comer and Jordan Threaten to Hold Him in Contempt
He's been hinting he won't show for his December 13 closed-door deposition despite being under subpoena, but now, Hunter Biden is confirming he will not appear for the deposition via his attorney, Abbe Lowell.
Lowell on Wednesday sent a letter to Comer, saying Hunter Biden will only appear for testimony in a public hearing setting.
"Mr. Biden has offered to appear at a hearing on the December 13, 2023, date you have reserved, or another date this month, to answer any question pertinent and relevant to the subject matter," Lowell wrote.
"He is making this choice because the Committee has demonstrated time and time again it uses closed-door sessions to manipulate, even distort, the facts and misinform the American public—a hearing would ensure transparency and truth in these proceedings," Lowell said. "We look forward to working out the schedule."
Apparently, Hunter and his attorneys are under the impression that they get to dictate the terms of this process.
However, House Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-KY) and Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) aren't having it.
In response to Lowell's letter, Comer and Jordan responded with a letter of their own. It's short, sweet, and to the point.
On November 8, 2023, we issued subpoenas to your client, Robert Hunter Biden, for a deposition on December 13, 2023. We received your letters dated November 28, 2023, and December 6, 2023, concerning the deposition subpoenas. Contrary to the assertions in your letter, there is no “choice” for Mr. Biden to make; the subpoenas compel him to appear for a deposition on December 13. If Mr. Biden does not appear for his deposition on December 13, 2023, the Committees will initiate contempt of Congress proceedings.
Bluff called. Your move, Hunter.
If I were a betting person, I'd put money on Hunter not sitting for deposition on the 13th. I suspect he and his counsel will drag this out as long as they possibly can. Kudos to Comer and Jordan for sticking to their guns on this. Let's hope that continues.
