Boston Marathon cancelled for first time in history

The Boston Marathon will be canceled for the first time in its history due to the coronavirus pandemic. On Thursday, Mayor Marty Walsh announced there is no way to hold the race without bringing large numbers of people into close proximity.

The marathon has ended its 124 year run, which persisted through two world wars, a volcanic eruption and another pandemic. According to the mayor, cancelling the marathon was the right call.
“While our goal, our hope, was to make progress in containing the virus and recovering our economy, this kind of event would not be responsible or realistic on September 14th, or anytime this year,” stated Walsh.
They will instead hold a virtual event, in which runners can time themselves and complete the 26.2 miles within a six hour period.
Runners will be able to participate from September 7th through 14th.
