Dems Showing Signs They Are Looking for Off-Ramp From Schumer Shutdown

RedState

Democrats may finally be realizing that they stepped into a trap of their own making when it comes to the Schumer Shutdown of the federal government.

Their problem? The Republicans aren't being blamed for it, nor should they be, since it's all about having enough Democrat votes to reach 60. The American people can see clearly whose fault it is, and Speaker of the House, Republican Rep. Mike Johnson (LA-4) has been very good at getting that out there.

It's also a clean continuing resolution on the table, so there's nothing in it for Dems to object to.

They wanted to use the moment to play to their leftist base and to get more spending; they don't care if they hurt the country's economy or many Americans in the process.

But now they have a problem. A Democrat senator revealed to The Hill that they are getting pressure.

The senator said colleagues are hearing not only from the American Federation of Government Employees, which represents 820,000 federal workers and called on Democrats this week to pass a clean continuing resolution to reopen government, but also from experts concerned about food assistance running out.

“We’ve heard from unions. We hear more from the nutrition people, they’re worried about running out of nutrition.

Democrats' intransigence on not opening the government will affect the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) soon.

Other organizations, like the Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA), want the shutdown over. They say it could start hurting economic momentum.

“We encourage lawmakers to support a clean continuing resolution that reopens the federal government and keeps our economy moving forward.”

The RILA represents retailers like Target, Best Buy, Home Depot, Dollar General and Walgreens.

We reported earlier how the Congressional Budget Office is warning that the Schumer Shutdown will take a big bite out of the GDP.

Democrats seem to be looking for a way out now.

Senate Democrats are taking a close look at a Republican proposal to pay all federal employees — including essential and furloughed workers — as they’re under new pressure from the nation’s largest federal workers union to pass a clean continuing resolution to reopen the government.

They also plan to introduce legislation to pay for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits and extend funding for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, which provides essential nutrition assistance for lower income mothers.

Most Democrats voted against a bill to pay federal employees and the military last week. Three crossed the aisle:  Sens. John Fetterman (D-PA), Raphael Warnock (D-GA), and Jon Ossoff (D-GA). That might have been the start of the cracking.

They've boxed themselves in, and they have to figure out how to fold, but not look like they are folding to their base.
