'Major police operation' under way in Munich after car driven into pedestrians Vance to meet with Zelenskyy at Munich Security Conference

A major police operation is under way in Munich after a car was driven into pedestrians in the south German city, officers have said.

Germany's Bild newspaper said 15 people had been injured.

In a statement, Munich's police said: "There is currently a major police operation in the area of Dachauer Street and Seidle Street.

"We are on site."

The area is close to Munich's central train station.

Police said on X they had "secured" the driver who did not pose any further threat.

Authorities didn't immediately give a specific number of injuries or provide details about the incident, including whether the people were hit deliberately.

Local journalist Sandra Demmelhuber, who was covering the event, posted a picture on X showing a damaged car surrounded by police and emergency crews.

She said: "There is a person lying on the street and a young man was taken away by the police. People were sitting on the ground, crying and shaking. Details are still unclear."

Those hurt were apparently taking part in a strike by the Verdi union, regional public broadcaster Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR) said.

The union, which represents workers in the service sector and is one of the biggest in Germany said it did not have any information on the incident.

The Munich Security Conference is to start on Friday and US Vice President JD Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy are arriving later on Thursday.
