In Farewell Address, As In His Presidency, Everyone Just Wants Joe Biden To Stop Talking

President Joe Biden addressed the nation Wednesday night in a “farewell address” that clocked in at just under 20 minutes. In a nation of some 335 million, less than 7,000 watched live on the White House’s YouTube livestream. After four years of lies, gibberish, and the occasional entertaining story about cannibals eating Uncle Bosie, Americans don’t want to hear anything else Joe Biden has to say.

No one wants to hear a man who couldn’t talk his way into staying in the race for president take credit for a hostage deal that magically fell into place right before Trump, who warned Hamas there would be “hell to pay” if the hostages were not returned, takes office. No one is inspired by a sleepy old man up past his bedtime rambling fun facts about the Statue of Liberty’s wind tolerance. No one wants to hear the word “democracy” uttered ever again by the guy who oversaw numerous attempts to throw his political opponent in prison. We all have better ways to spend a Wednesday night, like cleaning out our refrigerator salad drawers or unclogging our bathroom drains.

The lies are offensive because they aren’t convincing anyone anymore. They aren’t even designed to. Biden’s speechwriters are keeping up the same façade as the people who insisted that Biden was so energetic they couldn’t keep up with him and the people who hit send on tweets from the president’s account. The American people aren’t buying any of it, but the Biden team has to do it so their media friends can repeat it uncritically to each other. It’s all the outgoing president has left, besides the millions of dollars his family made from selling his “access” to foreign oligarchs.

Americans are the most tolerant people in the world, which is probably the only reason Joe Biden won’t die in prison. But for the love of all that’s holy, they’re ready for him to shut up and go away.

They’re sick of being lectured, talked down to, and told they’re “garbage.” They’re tired of playing make-believe that either Joe Biden or his vice president is competent enough to run the country. They’ve been very patient with this joke for four years, as their grocery bills rise, their towns are flooded with migrants, and the world grows more dangerous. There’s no need to rub it in their faces with the empty insistence that their country is “stronger, more prosperous, and more secure” than it was four years ago.

It wasn’t enough for Biden to crawl out of the White House and into his spot in the history books as a failed president. He had to make us indulge his delusions one last time.

Turns out, it would have been better if Biden had left with an Irish goodbye.
