Canada's Trudeau Has Now Crawled to Mar-a-Lago to Chat With Trump About Tariffs

Oh, Canada! Rumors that were floating around on X have borne out this Black Friday evening, as it's been confirmed that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has traveled to President-elect Donald Trump's home in Palm Beach, Florida, to discuss the proposed, 25 percent tariffs on imported goods from both our neighbor to the north and Mexico, which Trump announced on Nov. 25:

via the NYT:

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada on Friday night landed in Florida to see President-elect Donald J. Trump at Mar-a-Lago, two officials with direct knowledge of the visit said, after a threat by Mr. Trump to impose across-the-board tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico on Day 1.

One official said that Mr. Trudeau and Mr. Trump would dine together Friday evening, and that Mr. Trudeau was expected to stay in the area overnight, but not at Mar-a-Lago, Mr. Trump’s private club and home in Palm Beach, Fla.

Mr. Trudeau was accompanied on his visit by Dominic LeBlanc, Canada’s minister of public safety.

His trip to Florida comes just two days after Meta CEO and chairman, Mark Zuckerberg appeared to change his tune about tamping down on Americans' First Amendment rights, and made a pilgrimage to Mar-a-Lago.

But the leader of Canada's visit seems to carry a more combative tone than Zuckerberg's, as he told media earlier on Friday:

Trudeau said Trump got elected because he promised to bring down the cost of groceries but now he’s talking about adding 25% to the cost of all kinds of products including potatoes from Prince Edward Island.

"It is important to understand that Donald Trump, when he makes statements like that, he plans on carrying them out. There’s no question about it,” Trudeau said.

“Our responsibility is to point out that he would not just be harming Canadians, who work so well with the United States, but he would actually be raising prices for Americans citizens as well and hurting American industry and business,” he added.

Although, Trudeau added that while there are tensions, the allies "were able to successfully re-negotiate [the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA)], which he calls a “win win” for both countries"....and that "We can work together as we did previously."

The visit to Mar-a-Lago marks the first meeting with Trump and a world leader since the November elections.
