Trouble in Paradise: Pelosi and Schumer Spar Over Netanyahu Invitation to Address Congress

Bob Hoge reporting for RedState

Two of Capitol Hill’s most divisive and extreme Democrats were at odds Friday over one of the top political issues of our time—Israel and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s prosecution of the war against the terrorist/political group Hamas.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) thinks it was wrong that Congress asked Netanyahu to speak before Congress on July 24th, while Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) says the embattled prime minister deserves to be heard.

Neither of them is the good guy in this fight, as Schumer dramatically undermined Netanyahu in March when he meddled in their political process by telling the Israeli people they should get rid of him by holding elections:

I have known Prime Minister Netanyahu for a long time. While we have vehemently disagreed on many occasions, I will always respect his extraordinary bravery for Israel on the battlefield as a younger man. I believe in his heart his highest priority is the security of Israel. However, I also believe Prime Minister Netanyahu has lost his way by allowing his political survival to take precedence over the best interests of Israel.

Thanks for the backup, Chuck.

Meanwhile, the noble Pelosi, who famously ripped up a sitting president’s speech at the Capitol immediately following the State of the Union address, decried the fact the congressional leaders—including Schumer—invited the Israeli PM to address Congress.

Her message: “I think this is wrong.” Speaking to CNN’s ever-pained-looking Dana Bash, Pelosi ranted:

Frankly, I didn't approve of his being invited the last time [in 2015] but the speaker just on his own invited him without consulting with the rest of the leadership. And it came and he criticized President Obama for the masterful work that he had done with the nuclear agreement regarding Iran to stop them from developing a nuclear weapon. And I thought it was completely inappropriate.

“Masterful work” Obama had done with the Iran nuclear agreement? That compact was an absolute disaster—don't get me started. The California Democrat then went on to fret that a Netanyahu speech might draw protesters. Wait, I thought Democrats loved protesters?

Unhinged (after waxing poetic about Biden's terrible D-Day speech, her remarks about Israel start at about the 7:07 mark):

"I feel it's very sad that he has been invited, but who knows by then- will he still be prime minister? What is Benny Gantz going to be saying tomorrow? What's happening? Everything I read is that they're unhappy about this or unhappy about that. Not just Benny, but other members of his cabinet," Pelosi continued. "I wish that he would be a statesman and do what is right for Israel. We all love Israel. We all fought for Israel. [I wasn't aware that you fought for Israel, Nancy. When was that exactly?

"October 7 was terrible. Hamas is a terrorist organization. They're dedicated to the destruction of Israel. The hostages are not free. The people of Gaza are suffering. We need to help them not have him stand in the way of that for such a long time, him being Benjamin Netanyahu."

"I think it's going to invite more of what we have seen in terms of discontent among our own people about what's happening there. Let's try to have a two-state solution to make peace in the region rather than coming to the Capitol to draw protesters," she added.

A two-state solution. Right. How’s that plan been working out for the last several decades now?

Schumer on Thursday explained his decision to support Netanyahu's invitation to address Congress: "I have clear and profound disagreements with the prime minister… But because America’s relationship with Israel is ironclad and transcends one person or prime minister, I joined the request for him to speak."

While it’s always fun to watch Democrats fight, what’s unclear is what they propose Netanyahu do, even as they continually undermine him. Did they miss the videos of the horrific rapes and inhuman violence that Hamas inflicted upon the Israeli people in their Oct. 7 massacre? Do they think that if the Jewish state were just a little nicer, a little softer, peace would be achieved, and all would be forgotten?

Netanyahu must know that neither Democrat leader is his friend, even if they’re having a little spat. If Israel is to survive, they must wipe the sadistic, evil terrorist organization off the map, and for some inexplicable reason, too many Democrats just can’t seem to wrap their heads around that simple fact.
