Twitter Permanently Suspends Trump's Account
Twitter Inc. permanently banned U.S. President Donald Trump’s personal account for repeated rules violations, marking the most high-profile punishment the social-media company has ever imposed.
“After close review of recent Tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account and the context around them — specifically how they are being received and interpreted on and off Twitter — we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence,” the company wrote in a blog post on Friday.
The company announced the ban two days after Trump was initially suspended Wednesday for posting a series of tweets that misled users about the presidential election results, and appeared to encourage violent rioters who had mobbed the U.S. Capitol. One included a video message of Trump expressing love for the insurgents and calling the election “fraudulent.”
Throughout the president's term in office, he has relied on Twitter, often using it to announced policy initiatives and executive orders, prod lawmakers to action on various legislation, and more.
He also used it to reach supporters through a weekslong effort to challenge the results of the Nov. 3 presidential election.
There's a whole other category of Trump tweets in which he has offered personal, often biting opinions about other leaders, world events, popular culture, the media and polls both favorable and less so.
Still, he and other conservative politicians have lately accused social media outlets including Twitter of limiting access to content favorable to their viewpoints and demonstrating blatant political bias.
The president recently threatened to hold up defense funding over his insistence that the government add in an unrelated effort to repeal Section 230. That provides certain liability protections for social media companies over the content they post.
