Remember the ‘Colorado Christian Cake Baker’? Yuuup! They Are Terrorizing Him Again
Article by Clint Fargeau in "RedState":
A psychologist once observed: “The problem with crazy people is not that they are erratic, but that they are irrationally consistent.”
And rabid progressives are nothing if not consistent.
Colorado baker Jack Phillips was back in court Thursday after a lawyer filed a second lawsuit against him for refusing to create a gender-transition “birthday cake.”
Phillips, who was victorious at the U.S. Supreme Court in 2018 following years of litigation for refusing to make a custom cake for a same-sex wedding in 2012–at a time when the state of Colorado did not recognize same-sex marriage–is again being represented by the Alliance Defending Freedom.
Despite the high court’s 7-2 ruling in his favor two years ago, which found that the Colorado Civil Rights Commission had shown “clear and impermissible hostility” on the basis of Phillips’ religion and violated the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, the same state agency pursued another case against Phillips because he declined to make a cake celebrating transgenderism.
This latest lawsuit isn’t about some man-woman’s butt-hurt feelings, or even Phillips in particular. All these lawsuits have one purpose: telegraph to business owners throughout Colorado and the United States, “If you don’t fall into line, we will force you into frivolous and costly litigation until you give up.”
Phillips has been unusually brave and determined in resisting the attacks against his business. He has also received a great deal of support and assistance from legal advocacy groups. But most business owners will not risk their livelihoods in defense of their principles and constitutional rights. They will just abet perversion when required to avoid trouble.
What the woke lawfare crowd don’t seem to grasp is just how much populist blowback their abuse of the legal system generates. As one friend of mine–who made me aware of the latest attack on Phillips–said:
Every one of these lawsuits creates ten thousand new Trump voters. Average Americans look at Phillips and think, “That guy could be me: a kindly looking, hard-working, small-business owner having his life torn apart for refusing to do what the commission demands.” The legal terrorism against Phillips makes the public aware of just how unhinged the progressivism-state complex has become…
And therein lies the really troubling side of the Phillips saga: the ‘state’ part of the “progressivism-state complex.” The attacks on Phillips may be more about authoritarianism than woke ideology.
At the end of the day, the technocrats on the Colorado Civil Rights Commission probably care less about transgenderism or gay marriage than the plain fact that Phillips did not bow fast enough and low enough to their authority, regardless of the issue at hand.
After all, who does this uncredentialled, self-employed, yahoo baker think he is, resisting techno-bureaucrats’ engineering of the ‘good society’ with his so-called religious principles? If he gets away with it, how many other citizens will think they can assert their civil liberties against bureaucratic diktats? Best to make an example of him. Draw and quarter that prole!
The technocratic elite of America seem to be running a campaign to ‘educate’ average Americans into cowering silence and tractability.
If we elect the ‘wrong’ president; if we refuse to bake the correct cake; if we go outside without a mask on after they change their expert minds; if we try to assert our constitutional rights after their legal experts in the courts and administrative state have ‘explained them away’ … LOOK OUT. The techno-bureaucrats will use the government institutions they control to obliterate the recalcitrant.
They will harass, defame, and levy fines until the balance of power is clear. If the techno-bureaucrats say the sky is green, it’s green; and if they say it’s purple tomorrow, then that’s the new truth. If they say ‘Russian collusion’ happened, then it bloody well happened. If they say transgenderism should be celebrated by everyone, you had better pull out your party hat and dance to the music.
And if you dare to disagree, then the technocrats in the legacy media will let the world know you hate experts, ‘facts’, and ‘democracy’; and you love misinformation and bigotry.
At no time in the history of the United States have the functionaries of the state and media been more determined enemies of the people. Americans are being taught to fear the state, the legal system, and public discourse, not respect and abide them.
These days, justice is not blind, it’s insane–and the techno-bureaucrats want to make sure the public knows it. Better to steer clear and go along. Don’t encourage The Dragon to notice you.
So to be safe, remember this: the rules are what elite technocrats say they are today, and forget about yesterday. Principles–religious, constitutional, common-sense, or scientific (of the sort they don’t like)–have no weight or legitimacy.
