This Reason to Vote for Trump is More Important Than Impeachment to Most Voters

Oh, the people understand. They know who to blame. They may not like President Trump, but if he manages to stay in office for another year, he might just get another four years from those people. They know it, and he knows it.

“American carnage” is how President Donald Trump described the life of many citizens in his inaugural address. Let me quote it.

But for too many of our citizens, a different reality exists: Mothers and children trapped in poverty in our inner cities; rusted-out factories scattered like tombstones across the landscape of our Nation; an education system, flush with cash, but which leaves our young and beautiful students deprived of all knowledge; and the crime and the gangs and the drugs that have stolen too many lives and robbed our country of so much unrealized potential.

This American carnage stops right here and stops right now. We are one Nation, and their pain is our pain, their dreams are our dreams, and their success will be our success. We share one heart, one home, and one glorious destiny.

The oath of office I take today is an oath of allegiance to all Americans.

Trump did not promise he wouldn’t lie to us. He didn’t promise he wouldn’t mercilessly troll and attack the media. He didn’t promise us he wouldn’t use the presidency to feed his own stupendous ego. He didn’t promise us he wouldn’t featherbed his business interests (though he hasn’t kept any of his salary). He didn’t promise us he wouldn’t play dirty politics and use the government to gather dirt on his opponents.

He didn’t promise us we’d have Republicans in office–or keep them there. In fact, he pretty much promised us “the Republicans” such as we knew them, did not include him, and he was pretty happy to destroy and remake the party into his own personal brand (which he’s largely done).

He did promise this:

We, assembled here today, are issuing a new decree to be heard in every city, in every foreign capital, and in every hall of power. From this day forward, a new vision will govern our land. From this this day forward, it’s going to be only America first. America first.

Every decision on trade, on taxes, on immigration, on foreign affairs, will be made to benefit American workers and American families.

We must protect our borders from the ravages of other countries making our products, stealing our companies, and destroying our jobs. Protection will lead to great prosperity and strength. I will fight for you with every breath in my body, and I will never, ever let you down.

There is no doubt that, to those looking at the economy, at jobs, at the money in their 401(k), for good or for ill, right or wrong, Trump is doing his all to keep this promise. And Democrats are helping his case.

Every. Single. Day.

To wit: This headline, “‘I’m not committing the murders’: As Baltimore nears 300 homicides, mayor says city leadership not to blame.” My God in heaven, he really said that.

Baltimore is an example of American carnage, and it’s been run by Democrats for a half century. San Francisco is descending into third-world kleptocracy and socialism, with city councillors leading shouts featuring the F-word followed by “the police” at political rallies to elect the son of cop killers to be the next district attorney.

The ever-churning loony bin of a Democratic field running for president daily reminds us that American billionaires are evil and must be stripped of their wealth, to make the government wealthier. They forget that voters don’t see the government as a source of wealth, because it isn’t.

Democrats are pandering to the over-educated, the liberal media, and the narrowest of special interests. They forget that most Americans who work for a living, pay bills, raise kids, and do their best to provide a good life for their families possess common sense. Though Ronald Reagan is screaming in his grave at the reality show actor inhabiting the White House, he shares an ability to cut to common sense with his latest successor.

Here’s a highlight from Reagan’s campaign kickoff speech from November 13, 1979.

…They tell us we must learn to live with less, and teach our children that their lives will be less full and prosperous than ours have been; that the America of the coming years will be a place where because of our past excesses it will be impossible to dream and make those dreams come true.

I dont believe that. And, I dont believe you do either… Our leaders attempt to blame their failures on circumstances beyond their control, on false estimates by unknown, unidentifiable experts who rewrite modern history in an attempt to convince us our high standard of living, the result of thrift and hard work, is somehow selfish extravagance which we must renounce as we join in sharing scarcity…

(Of course, one area Reagan hit upon repeatedly is that government should live within its means. I don’t think President Trump, or either party have any will to correct this anymore. But the people have voted themselves bread and circuses, so they put up with an unsustainable debt as a permanent fixture that one day others will have to fix. The voters don’t see that the “others” are their own descendants.)

When all the impeachment imbroglio is stripped away, many voters may ignore Trump’s pernicious lies, his coarse manner, his unscrupulous politics, and his self-centered impulsivity. It’s what Erick Erickson has referred to as the left’s terrible blind spot (paraphrasing). They just don’t understand that voters can detest Trump’s actions yet bust down doors to vote for him. It’s a place the media and the Democrats cannot go in their own minds.

But it’s right here in the common sense answers to American carnage. It’s not some unseen force, or as Reagan said “circumstances beyond their control, on false estimates by unknown, unidentifiable experts” that has created this carnage. It’s not Bill Gates’ or Jeff Bezos’ billions that created this carnage (Washington Post writers would do well to remember that Bezos’ billions pay their salaries).

It’s not Barack Obama saying “those jobs aren’t coming back,” as if there is no hope for American industrial jobs to return–that the ship has sailed to the Far East, never again to find a friendly wind home. It’s not Baltimore Mayor Jack Young saying “I’m not committing the murders and that’s what people need to understand.”
