Israel launched strikes on multiple sites in Tehran on Saturday, its defence minister said, as explosions were reported in the Iranian capital.
US officials did not immediately confirm involvement, though Israeli media described the operation as coordinated with Washington.
Local sources reported loud explosions in multiple locations across Tehran, accompanied by columns of smoke rising into the sky.
The Israeli defence ministry said it carried out a ‘preventive strike’ on Iran, as the military announced that it had sounded air raid sirens in areas across the country “to prepare the public for the possibility of missiles being launched toward Israel.”
