The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) is out with a new ad this week blasting Republicans for not legalizing amnesty with last week’s “border deal.” Republican candidates in tight races will have GOP Senate chief Mitch McConnell to thank.
On Wednesday, DSCC released a compilation of left-wing pundits mocking Republican senators who ultimately opposed a compromise border bill last week. The legislation failed a procedural hurdle for a vote on the Senate floor 49-50.
The $118 billion package combined wartime aid to Israel and Ukraine with funding for the border. The bill legalized 5,000 crossings per day and pushed asylum for all. Even Democrats who wrote the bill conceded that under it, “the border never closes.”
Conservative lawmakers tanked the bill negotiated by Oklahoma Sen. James Lankford under McConnell’s leadership. The debacle gave Democrats ammunition to blast Republicans as apathetic on one of the top issues for voters headed into the fall elections.
“Now they had the opportunity to get a bill, a bipartisan bill, passed into law that would really do something about the crisis at the border,” says Democratic strategist Symone Sanders featured in the ad.
“Senate Republicans won’t secure the border,” the ad ends. “They won’t keep us safe.”
If McConnell and the rest of GOP leadership had negotiated a legitimate border bill with substantive security measures, the ad couldn’t exist. Of course, had Democrats even pretended to desire a secure border, then the White House might have taken a different approach than the aggressive effort to reverse every effective program implemented under President Donald Trump.
On Tuesday, House Republicans impeached Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for ducking the administration’s constitutional obligation to enforce U.S. border laws. Mayorkas was impeached for “Willful and Systemic Refusal to Comply With the Law” and “Breach of the Public Trust.”
Mayorkas, said House Speaker Mike Johnson, “has undermined public trust through multiple false statements to Congress, obstructed lawful oversight of the Department of Homeland Security, and violated his oath of office.”
On Tuesday, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) released monthly data showing January border crossings nearly reached record apprehensions, following still more record numbers in December. According to the Washington Examiner, more than 10 million illegal immigrants have come across the border since Biden took office. The House Judiciary reports 1.7 million “known gotaways” have evaded border agents through early October.
Lawmakers in the upper chamber followed the amnesty bill defeat with a $95 billion foreign spending package that Republican senators are demanding the House take to a vote. This foreign spending bill would give $14 billion to Israel and $10 billion to “humanitarian” efforts abroad plus a staggering $60 billion to Ukraine. If passed, the bill would bring U.S. taxpayers’ payout for the proxy war in Ukraine to more than $170 billion, according to The New York Times.
