BRICS and the Currency Wars

Talk of expanding BRICS membership and de-dollarization is gaining traction, but enlarging the group or ditching the dollar remains elusive.

Recently 19 countries, among them Saudi Arabia and Iran, have enquired about joining the BRICS bloc, which was established by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The nations that attended the BRICS summit held in June were all emerging economies, disenchanted with the U.S.-led international order.

Democratic Republic of Congo Foreign Minister Christophe Lutundula Apala expressed the feelings of many attendees when he said that his country wanted to join BRICS in the hope that the bloc could “bring change and the creation of a new international order.”

Replacing the dollar in international trade settlements is seen as a key step toward breaking U.S. hegemony. The de-dollarization movement is gaining traction in the sense that many countries are talking about ditching the dollar. Trading in currencies other than the dollar, however, is extremely difficult and expensive. Other currencies have limited global acceptance and are subject to exchange rate volatility and currency risks. They also suffer from higher transaction costs, limited convertibility, perceived instability, and lack of settlement infrastructure.

A typical case of attempted de-dollarization is Argentina, which uses the yuanto trade with China. But Argentina’s economy is on the brink of collapse, and the country is running short of dollars. This year’s inflation rate is 115.6 percent, while the country’s currency, the peso, has fallen from 128 to the dollar last July to 264 this year. Argentina’s central bank is using the yuan to purchase dollars in the international market in order to prop up the economy.

Russia and China now conduct 80 percent of their business in the yuan and the ruble, while the ruble is used in 40 percent of all export transactions between Russia and member countries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. This is not exactly proof that widespread de-dollarization is underway or that it is even possible. International sanctions against Russia prevent Moscow from using dollars and trading with most developed countries. Consequently, Russia has had to find a way around the U.S.-led global financial system just to survive. However, the economy is shrinking, and the lack of dollar inflows is causing the ruble to lose value. The ruble went from 74.45 rubles to the dollar on May 10 to 90.03 on July 17.

While Russia and China trade in local currency, neither wants to hold the other’s currency in reserves. Russia’s central bank still has more than half of its reserves in U.S. dollars, with the euro as the No. 2 reserve currency. In fact, Moscow is holding 30 times as much U.S. dollar reserves as the yuan. And this ratio is consistent with other nations, as the global average is only 3 percent of foreign reserves being held in yuan.

As none of the BRICS members are willing to hold the others’ currencies as reserves, the U.S. dollar is the primary reserve currency of BRICS members. Some 60 percent of the world’s central bank reserves are held in U.S. dollars. And 88 percent of all global trade is settled in dollars. One option put forth by nations on the de-dollarization bandwagon has been to conduct trade in their own currencies while still holding reserves in dollars. Currently, countries can obtain foreign reserves by selling their exports in dollars. In addition to trading in local currencies being problematic and subject to greater risk than dollar transactions, countries would still have to go on foreign exchange markets and purchase dollars to hold in reserve. And can countries truly claim to be de-dollarizing if they still hold their reserves in dollars?

BRICS has formed a development bank in China called the New Development Bank. To have a BRICS currency, however, BRICS would need a central bank. As there are no viable means of combining the real, ruble, rupee, yuan, and rand, the New Development Bank is a U.S. dollar-based bank. Furthermore, not only does the de-dollarization of BRICS remain part of a hypothetical future, but so does the bloc’s expansion.

Despite recent talks, BRICS has yet to admit any new nations. In fact, to date, no official accession mechanism has been put in place to do so. The next BRICS summit is set for August when a possible membership procedure will be discussed. The summit is proving problematic, however, because it is due to be attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin, now the target of an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC). Given that South Africa is a member of the ICC, Pretoria would be expected to arrest Mr. Putin if he shows up.

The nation is also obligated to arrest Mr. Putin under South African law. South Africa has failed to condemn the Russian war in Ukraine, and it is unclear if Pretoria will violate international and domestic law should it allow Mr. Putin to attend the BRICS summit. South Africa’s primary opposition party, the Democratic Alliance, has applied to the courts to oblige the authorities to arrest Mr. Putin if he enters the country.

DOJ Prepares To Throw David Weiss Under The Bus

The Department of Justice (DOJ) began to offer dates for Delaware U.S. Attorney David Weiss to explain on Capitol Hill why federal prosecutors struck a weak plea agreement with the president’s son.

On Monday, the assistant attorney general for legislative affairs sent a letter to the House Judiciary Committee “to offer U.S. Attorney Weiss to testify shortly after Congress returns from
the August district work period.” The department offered Sept. 27-28 or Oct. 18-19 for Weiss to give public testimony, according to the letter obtained by The Federalist.

“U.S. Attorney Weiss is the appropriate person to speak to these issues, as he is both the senior Department official responsible for the investigation as well as the person with direct knowledge of the facts necessary to respond to the assertions in which you have expressed interest,” the letter said, indicating the DOJ is preparing to throw Weiss under the bus for the Biden-protection racket.

Lawmakers received the letter on the same day the House Oversight Committee finalized plans to hear from former Hunter Biden business partner Devon Archer, who will give testimony on Monday next week. Archer is expected to testify that Hunter Biden facilitated meetings and phone calls with his then-vice president father at least two dozen times.

Monday’s letter from the Justice Department was signed by a mid-level staffer, not by Attorney General Merrick Garland or even his deputy, while open questions remain surrounding Weiss’s ability to press the charges recommended by federal investigators.

Gary Shapley is one of two veteran agents at the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) who testified last week as a whistleblower on the Hunter Biden tax probe. On Thursday, Shapley claimed Weiss was denied special counsel authority to investigate the first family.

Hunter Biden struck a plea deal with federal prosecutors, led by Weiss, limited to two misdemeanor tax crimes and one charge of felony firearm possession. The latter will be forgiven following 24 months of sobriety, an agreement in jeopardy if the mysterious cocaine in the White House were linked to Hunter, who authored a book on his own struggles with drug addiction.

Joseph Ziegler, the other IRS agent who testified alongside Shapley, told lawmakers the case warranted special counsel protection.

“I still think that a special counsel is necessary for this investigation,” Ziegler said, before a federal judge has signed off on the plea agreement.

Both made clear that significant felony charges were left off the table in violation of department policy. Whistleblowers also said federal tax investigators were left in the dark about evidence of a $10 million bribery scheme between the president and his son and Ukrainian businessmen.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, has called on Garland to allow nearly a dozen DOJ officials to testify about the whistleblower allegations last week. The Department of Justice said Monday, however, that Weiss himself could address the specific allegations of widespread interference made by the pair of IRS whistleblowers in their bombshell testimony.

“The Department believes it is strongly in the public interest for the American people and for Congress to hear directly from U.S. Attorney Weiss on these assertions and questions about his authority at a public hearing,” the letter read.

American Gun Owners Should Pay Close Attention to What is Happening in Brazil

The First Amendment in the United States Bill of Rights guarantees the right of free speech to all Americans. The current assault on those rights is clear. But going hand in hand with an attack on the First Amendment is an equally dangerous one on the Second Amendment, our inherent right to keep and bear arms, our right to defend ourselves, our family, and our property. As Americans, we are blessed to have staunch defenders of the Second Amendment – groups like the National Rifle Association (NRA) – standing firm against the Biden administration and Democrats’ push to infringe on those sacred rights. But as we all know, freedom is fragile and must be tended to in order to keep it alive. But for others around the world, in some places very close by, those freedoms appear to be disappearing. It happens incrementally, so no one will notice until it is too late.

In Brazil, with the election of far left-wing President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva comes new stricter gun laws. This past weekend, Lula signed into law, the “Responsible Gun Control” – operative word “control” decree. It reduces Brazilians’ rights to firearm ownership and rolls back policies put into place by former conservative President Jair Bolsonaro. The decree not only reduces the types of weapons citizens can own, but it also drastically reduces how much ammunition they can legally buy. It is also very far-reaching as it puts restrictions on shooting clubs, weapons used for hunting, marksmen, and collectors.

One of the most ominous portions of the law: Any regulation or inspection of civilian weapons is moving from the purview of the Brazilian Army to the federal police, who will now have sole authority over any activity by Brazilians involving weapons and ammunition. The federal police will work in conjunction with Brazil’s Justice and Public Security Ministry. (What could go wrong there?)

Lula apparently had no problem saying the quiet part out loud. In a speech after the signing, he stated, “We cannot allow arsenals in the hands of people.”

Luis Inacio Lula da Silva is not the only leader in the northern hemisphere who has taken steps to limit his citizens’ ability to defend themselves. It is happening much closer to home. In May of this year in Canada, the Minister of Public Safety, Marco Mendocino, announced the proposal of C-21. The proposal would put a national freeze on handguns and create a permanent ban on “assault”- style weapons. It would also impose massive restrictions on both new weapons being sold and existing firearms. There is also a curious passage in C-21 that states, “Nothing proposed in Bill C-21 derogates from the rights of Indigenous peoples recognized and affirmed under section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982.” Does it all depend on who you are in Canada? Also, a curious bit of detail: no mention of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in the announcement of C-21.

And, of course, here in America, Democrats’ assault on the Second Amendment rolls merrily along. But fortunately, in this case, the wheels of government are turning slowly. In January of this year, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) sponsored the latest assault ban attempt. The bill would make it illegal to “knowingly import, sell, manufacture, transfer, or possess a semiautomatic assault weapon (SAW) or large capacity ammunition feeding device (LCAFD).”

In Brazil and Canada, as well as here at home, the argument for weapons restrictions is to reduce crime. But that argument really doesn’t hold up in Brazil, at least in the last year of Bolsonaro’s presidency, where gun restrictions were eased. In Brazil, the rate of violent deaths was at the lowest level in a decade, despite there being an increase in firearm ownership.

Bottom line: The attempt to restrict citizens’ rights to defend themselves is going on all around us. And while we have groups like the NRA to be ever vigilant of our Second Amendment rights, as the citizens of Brazil and Canada are finding out, those rights can be threatened in the blink of an eye – or in the immediate aftermath of electing a leader who knows that the easiest way to maintain power is through an unarmed citizenry. Let’s make sure the lessons of Brazil and Canada are not lost on Americans.

Kamala Harris: The Opportunistic Queen of Disinformation

Resume-packing opportunist peddles lies about Florida's Black History curriculum for media attention

posted by Dianny at SweetMercifulZeus

Have you ever noticed that the people who shriek the loudest about disinformation are some of its most prolific purveyors?

Vice President Kamala Harris has been on a jihad against Florida's new African American History curriculum ever since some staffer brought it to her attention.

The vapid Veep falsely claims the conservative state is “gaslighting” and “whitewashing” America’s history by teaching students that slaves benefited from slavery.

As National Review writer Charles C.W. Cooke wrote last Friday about Kamala's disinformation:

This is a brazen lie. It’s an astonishing lie. It’s an evil lie. It is so untrue — so deliberately and cynically misleading — that, in a sensible political culture, Harris would be obligated to issue an apology. Instead, NBC confirms that she will repeat the lie today during a speech in Jacksonville.

To shed light on Kamala's brazen lies, Cooke includes in his column every reference to slavery, slaves, civil rights, the abolitionist movement, and African Americans found in the state’s new curriculum, and it is a long-ass list.

He notes that the item over which Kamala is shrieking like an unhinged Cassandra is but one of 191 items on teaching students about slavery and abolition. But Kamala tries to make it seem as if that is the only thing Florida teachers are permitted to say about slavery.

As Cooke said in a tweet last Friday:

I am afraid that there is simply no way of perusing this course and concluding that it “gaslights” people or whitewashes slavery. It is comprehensive and blunt. Harris is lying to a degree that is impressive even for her.

But that is precisely how this kind of disinformation works.

Some activist in the media zeroes in on one single item listed in the Florida curriculum and writes a hysterical column about it, complete with a misleading and histrionic headline.

This then gets picked up by other activists on Twitter and in the media who proceed to unquestioningly accept the original premise without doing an ounce of additional fact-checking or research.

Eager to give their boss ammunition to use against the most popular Republican governor in the country, staffers then brief Kamala on the false claim and immediately begin exploiting it as a way to elevate her public profile.

Naturally, Kamala never takes the time to research it herself because she is feckless, lazy, and stupid.

To add insult to injury, Kamala's staff then arranges for her to take a trip to Florida aboard Air Force Two where she can peddle her disinformation at taxpayer expense.

When Florida Governor Ron DeSantis obliterates Kamala over her demagoguery, the media responds with headlines like "DeSantis Under Fire for Florida's Controversial Black History Curriculum."

And the Disinformation Casserole is complete.

In a Twitter thread last week, AG Hamilton pointed out that Florida's Black History curriculum wasn’t devised by DeSantis or any other politician but by a group of African American scholars.

He adds:

The press and Harris are doing this because they think it scores points against a Governor they don't like, but they are really smearing a group that worked for months to develop a curriculum to ensure FL students are extensively taught a vital element of American history.

In short, to continue pushing the conspiracy theory that Ron DeSantis is a great, big racist, Kamala Harris is unknowingly stabbing a group of black scholars in the back.

But like much of what Kamala Harris does, this lie is getting pushback.

Dr. William Allen, one of the scholars involved in developing the curriculum told ABC News in an unaired segment of an interview that Kamala's claims are "categorically false."

Even a CNN contributor called out the vapid Veep’s dishonest demagoguery.

But see, Kamala has never been one to let the Truth get in the way of a little faux righteous indignation.

Every scholar who worked on the curriculum could show up at the Executive Office Building tomorrow and explain to this opportunistic hag why she is wrong, and still, Kamala wouldn't care.

The point isn’t to “speak truth to power” or whatever nonsense Kamala claims she is doing.

The point is to knowingly spread disinformation to turn public opinion against the one Republican presidential candidate the Biden administration fears more than Joe fears the steps to Air Force One.

Kamala Harris has always been a lying demagogue. She will never admit her mistake or offer an apology.

Do you remember Kamala’s interview with late-night host Stephen Colbert after Biden chose her as his 2020 running mate? Colbert asked Kamala how she can be pals with Biden after accusing him of being a racist. Rather than offer an intelligent response, Kamala cackled uproariously and repeatedly said, "It was a debate!"

In other words, lying and slandering your opponent to score political points is just part of the hilarious fun of running for office.

But Kamala's "It was a debate! [cackle-cackle]" response is instructive for us today because it reveals just how fake all of her righteous indignation is.

Her over-the-top outrage about Florida's school curriculum is just as phony as her over-the-top outrage about Joe Biden's opposition to busing.

In 2017, not long after Kamala first joined the Senate and started making a name for herself with her sanctimonious lectures to Trump nominees, I described her as a "resume-packing future presidential candidate." Kamala used her staged dramatics during Senate hearings to boost her public profile and get good press coverage (and sound bites) to kick-start her quest for the White House.

Six years later and nothing about Kamala Harris has changed.

Kamala doesn't give a damn about Florida's African American History curriculum.

What she cares about is media attention. Kamala knows that latching onto this issue like a race-baiting limpet will give her the headlines and social media buzz she desperately craves.

Sure, it's vapid, cynical, and opportunistic.

But then again, so is Kamala Harris.
