Democrats are making loud noises about January 6th again, claiming that coming revelations will “blow the roof” off the House of Representatives.
Jamie Raskin, who serves on the January 6th Committee, recently claimed while speaking at Georgetown University that he and his colleagues will present “evidence” that Donald Trump coordinated with white nationalist and fascist groups “in order to support the coup.”
This comes via NBC News, which reported on Raskin’s comments.
“The hearings will tell a story that will really blow the roof off the House,” Raskin said Thursday at an event hosted by Georgetown University’s Center on Faith and Justice in Washington.
Members of the committee plan to hold those hearings in June and aim to have a report out about their investigation by the end of the summer or early fall, said Raskin, who sits on the panel.
“No president has ever come close to doing what happened here in terms of trying to organize an inside coup to overthrow an election and bypass the constitutional order,” he said. “And then also use a violent insurrection made up of domestic violent extremist groups, white nationalist and racist, fascist groups in order to support the coup.”
This is such nonsense, and we’ve heard it all before. Why should anyone believe this time is different? There have been numerous leaks by the January 6th committee up to this point. All of them have been massive duds that don’t begin to prove the committee’s assertions. The idea that they’d have the discipline to hold back stunning, game-changing revelations until the open hearings is farcical. There’s no entity in Washington that is that buttoned-up, much less when speaking of Congress. If there was anything that actually added up to a criminal offense, we’d have heard about it by now.
And sure enough, if we keep reading NBC News’ write-up what we’ll find is that Raskin is planning to rehash the same failed talking points the Democrats have been pushing for over a year. Namely, that it was somehow a “coup” or illegal for Trump to speak to various surrogates about whether it was possible for Mike Pence to object to the electors.
The plan was to use then-Vice President Mike Pence to try to get President Joe Biden’s electoral vote tally below the 270 majority needed for victory, Raskin said, which under the 12th Amendment would shift the contest to a vote in the House. If that occurred, he said, Republicans would have the majority to seize the presidency because the votes would be cast by the state delegations, and the GOP controls more state delegations than the Democrats do.
“It’s anybody’s guess what could have happened — martial law, civil war. You know, the beginning of authoritarianism,” Raskin said, speculating on what might have unfolded if the plan was successful. “I want people to pay attention to what’s going on here, because that’s as close to fascism as I ever want my country to come to again.”
What actually happened? A draft memo on the legality of Pence sending the electors back to the states circulated among some of Trump’s surrogates. It was never implemented, and there is no evidence whatsoever that anyone involved with the memo was trying to enact a “coup.” Rather, they were looking for legal ways, ill-advised as they might have been, to delay certification until investigations into voter fraud occurred.
To reiterate for those on the left ready to scream bloody murder, I’m not saying one has to agree with that reasoning. But it is not illegal to explore ways to object to an election. In fact, in what is just peak irony and hypocrisy, Jamie Raskin himself objected to the certification of the election of Donald Trump in early 2017 while Congress was finalizing the results. For any Democrat to now pretend it’s somehow a “coup” to object to the certification of an election is incredibly rich and ridiculous.
Further, there is clearly no evidence of direct coordination between Trump, Trump’s surrogates, and anyone who carried out the breach of the Capitol Building. Instead, what you probably see from the January 6th committee is some tortured connecting of the dots between those who went to the Capitol and those who held protests over a mile away. Those are two separate things, though, no matter how much the left tries to conflate them and it is not illegal to protest.
In short, this entire spectacle is a joke. These hearings are going to produce nothing of value and the January 6th committee is a waste of time and money. It’s filled to the brim with hypocrites and spot-light seekers attempting to criminalize things they themselves have done. In contrast, the American people by and large do not care about January 6th and are much more concerned about the nation’s inflation crisis and other Democrat-led boondoggles.
