French election: Voters choose between Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen as nation to pick next president
French voters are heading to the polls in a presidential election runoff
between incumbent Emmanuel Macron and his far-right rival Marine Le
Pen. The result is likely to have large repercussions for the future of
Europe.
Emmanuel Macron casts vote
Emmanuel Macron cast his vote after Ms Le Pen at a polling station in Le Touquet, northern France.
He shook dozens of hands on the journey from his family home in the resort town of Le Touquet to his voting station.
Inside
he greeted more people and posed for photographs with his wife
Brigitte, before casting his ballot with a wink for the cameras.
Marine Le Pen casts her vote
Far-right
contender Marine Le Pen became the first of the two candidates to cast
her vote in Henin-Beaumont in northern France today.
Ms Le Pen emerged from the ballot box with a beaming smile before dropping her vote into a transparent box.
Outside the polling centre she took selfies with supporters.
