Whelp. President Walter Mitty is sharing more of his exciting flights of fancy with America. This time, recounting the time he served as a special liaison between Israel’s Prime Minister Golda Meir and the Egyptian government during the 1967 Six Day War.
During a menorah-lighting ceremony, the demented old coot recounted this fiction. And just like James Thurber’s character, President Walter Mitty’s amazing Six Day War story is utter bullshit from start to finish.
That wasn’t even the first time President Walter Mitty recounted his Six Day War lie.
As with all his flights of fancy — like his story of being a university professor or being arrested on his way to see Nelson Mandela or his exploits on the baseball diamond — old President Mitty keeps going back to the same well of bullshit.
And it is bullshit.
First off, Golda Meir was not the Prime Minister of Israel during the Six-Day War. Levi Eshkol was Israel’s prime minister. Meir didn’t become prime minister until 1968.
And President Walter Mitty? Well, he wasn’t even Senator Walter Mitty during the Six-Day War. He was Joe the mediocre law student at Syracuse University where, in 1968, he graduated number 76 in a class of 85 people — or, as Joe put it, in the top half of his class.
Yeah, every word of that story is a lie. Though, in fairness to the broken down old crock, he did, as a Senator, meet Golda Meir in 1973 – six years after the Six Day War.
And while some Biden defenders might say that Biden just mistakenly confused the Six Day War with the Yom Kippur War of 1973, the fact remains that Joe wasn’t there to act as any kind of “liason” between Egypt and Israel.
Instead, he was just there on one of those dippy trips members of Congress often take while on recess. And let’s just say, the Israelis weren’t very impressed with the upstart newbie.
According to an October 2020 Times of Israel report, a declassified memo about the freshman Senator’s visit in no way matches President Walter Mitty’s version of events.
Biden, who had been in the Senate for less than a year, started swinging his weight around like he was the President or Secretary of State. He told Meir that the territory Israel captured during the Six Day War had led to “creeping annexation.” He urged the Prime Minister to take the first step toward peace by returning the territory Israel won in the Six Day War. Then he claimed the Nixon administration was being “dragged by Israel” making it impossible to have a real debate in the Senate because Senators were afraid of offending Jewish voters.
According to the memo’s writer, though the upstart freshman Senator acted respectful toward Meir and claimed that he was there to learn, Biden “made comments that signaled his lack of diplomatic experience.”
I’ve said before that Joe Biden has told these lies so often and for so long, in that fetid stew he calls a brain, he can no longer separate reality from fantasy.
Maybe at one time Joe knew his fictional flights of fancy were lies. But, given his cognitive decline, I don’t think he does anymore.
