So how does Marco Rubio feel about impending impeachment over chaos at the Capitol?
He left no room for speculation Sunday amid his appearance on Fox News.
The Republican Florida senator will squash it the “first chance” he gets.
And why?
Well, for starters, he considers it “stupid.”
Speaking to Chris Wallace, Rubio was resolute:
“We already have a flaming fire in this country, and it’s like taking a bunch of gasoline and pouring it on top of the fire. … The first chance I get to vote to end this trial, I’ll do it because I think it’s really bad for America.”
Not that he reckons every south-gone endeavor should be swept under the rug; but impeachment isn’t the ticket:
“If you want to hold people accountable, there’s other ways to do it. Particularly for a president, including — as I said — the perspective of history, and even now as people are learning more about all of this.”
Marco made it clear: The impeachment situation’s a move à la politics, not merely a judicial jaunt honorably aimed at taking a bite out of crime.
And the result won’t help matters:
“This is not a criminal justice trial, this is a political process. Ultimately, it is a political process that’s going to inject things into our public discourse, into our debates, that’s going to make it harder to get important things done, and it’s just going to continue to fuel these divisions that have paralyzed the country.”
As noted by The Daily Wire, 29 congressional GOP’ers have opposed a Trump conviction in the Senate.
Nevertheless, Marco asserted our 45th president “bears responsibility for some of what happened.”
However, that’s a “separate notion” from opening a can of impeachment.
The chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee pointed to quite the stunner of an example: Richard Nixon was kept on the hook despite the lack of a congressional vote.
Rubio’s on board with looking forward — as covered by RedState’s Jeff Charles in November, the congressman insisted the Republican Party was in dire need of a rebranding:
“The future of the party is based on a multiethnic, multiracial working-class coalition.”
As for Dems’ 2nd attempt to brand Trump, though the House intends to deliver its Article of Impeachment Monday, a Senate trial’s not on the docket ’til February 8th.
More from the Wire:
The impeachment trial is scheduled to begin in the Senate the week of February 8, even though the House plans to deliver the Article of Impeachment to the Senate, which triggers the beginning of the process, on Monday. This is because Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) struck a deal earlier this week to extend the pre-trial process and delay the beginning of the trial, providing more time to prepare arguments and for the Senate to conduct other business.
Back to steps toward the future, Marco put it this way:
“[Not only is it] going to keep us from focusing on really important things, but it’s also just going to stir it up even more and make it even harder to get things done moving forward.”
More pointedly, he began the segment thusly:
“[F]irst of all, I think the trial is stupid.”
