‘Legit disturbing’: Campaign ‘lobbying’ Canada to lower the
voting age to 8 so kids can vote on climate change
You might remember in March when 125 House Democrats voted
for Rep. Ayanna Pressley’s bill that
would mandate a national voting age of 16 — it even had a handy
#16toVote hashtag. “From gun violence, to immigration reform, to climate
change, to the future of work,” young people “have earned inclusion in our
democracy,” she tweeted.
Even before that, a Bloomberg columnist argued that the
voting age should
be lowered to 13 or 14, with voting being the “training wheels” to get
people involved in civics.
Well, forget about all that. In Canada, there’s a campaign
by “kids” (well, fronted by kids) to lower the national voting age from 18 to 8
before the October election “to make sure climate change is on top of the
ballot — and voters’ minds — this federal election in October.” Even the first
question on the FAQ page is, “Are you serious?” The answer? They’re serious
about climate change, but not so serious about letting 8-year-olds vote. “We’re
mobilized, we’re motivated (and full of sugar) and we’re willing to use any
tool at our disposal, from picketing to pitching tantrums.”
The #18to8 campaign is asking Canada to lower the voting age to make sure that climate change is on top of the ballot.Learn more here ➡️ https://t.co/q6uGHXPeOm pic.twitter.com/qqiEcpVDJ2— David Suzuki FDN (@DavidSuzukiFDN) August 26, 2019
