Insurance Executive Assassin Luigi Mangione Pleads Guilty to Federal Charges Killing United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson

Many people saw the cold murder of CEO Brian Thompson carried out by Luigi Mangione on the street in New York City.  Mangione was facing state and federal charges related to the assassination.  Today, Mangione pled guilty to two federal counts of stalking Thompson.

I’m not sure if this is some scheme by his defense attorneys to avoid the state murder charge; it seems like it is.  According to the defense, Mangione cannot be charged by federal and state court for the same crime; therefore, a guilty plea to the federal crime of stalking looks like it is being used as an escape mechanism from the state charge of murder.

What is super creepy about this case is the amount of support Mangione has for the murder.  There is a remarkable and unnerving amount of online support for him, despite his cold-blooded killing of Brian Thompson.

NEW YORK – Luigi Mangione, whose coldblooded killing of an insurance executive on a Manhattan sidewalk rattled the nation and struck fear into corporate America, pleaded guilty Friday to two federal stalking charges for the death of UnitedHealthcare leader Brian Thompson.

“On the morning of Dec. 4, 2024, I shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan and he died,” Mangione solemnly told the judge during a court hearing.

Mangione, wearing tan jail garb, told the judge that he spent years enduring severe pain, including a broken back, and witnessed others with similar experiences. He said that after learning of an investor conference, he emailed UnitedHealthcare, posing as an investor at a firm managing over $50 million in assets, to request information about it.

“Unlike my previous interactions with insurers, I received an immediate response within an hour,” Mangione added. He said he made part of a gun using a 3-D printer and planned the killing.

U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett said Mangione faces up to life in prison at his sentencing, which she set for December. Jamie McDonald, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, said after Friday’s hearing that his office intended to seek the maximum penalty, saying Mangione committed the crime in order to “draw public attention to his dislike of certain businesses.”

“No grievance, political belief or ideological cause can ever justify murder,” McDonald said. “There can be no celebrity in assassination.”

Thompson’s family sat in the front row of the courtroom during the hearing. “Today’s guilty plea marks an important step toward justice for Brian and for our family,” the family said after the hearing. (read more)

White House Notes Canada Biggest Enabler of Transshipped Chinese Products to U.S. Market

The White House Office of Trade and Manufacturing released an extensive report this week identifying the major nations who enable China to transship goods into the U.S market in an effort to avoid tariffs.  [REPORT HERE]

Within the report several nations and regions are identified as being used by Chinese manufacturers to avoid U.S. customs and duty enforcement mechanisms.  However, both Canada and Mexico are cited as primary enablers of the process.

The issue strikes at the heart of the problem identified long ago with the NAFTA agreement, and the problem only worsens when the USMCA provisions on country of origin are not enforced.

When you remove oil and lumber, the majority of Canada’s manufactured exports to the USA contain Chinese component parts and this has been the source of much friction in the current trade negotiations.  The manufacturing supply chain within all free trade agreements only works when the source of component goods is accurately recorded.

CANADA – […] The report released Thursday from the Office of Trade and Manufacturing Policy — titled “The Great Transshipment Scam” and featuring a timely image of a Trojan horse on the front page — accuses China of routing their exports through third countries with more favourable U.S. tariff rates.

An estimated 40 countries, including Canada, comprise a “shadow transshipment network” used by China, the report argues.

“In plain terms, illegal transshipment is smuggling disguised as trade — fraud cloaked in paperwork — and, in truth, nothing new,” the report says, adding what has changed is the “breadth, depth, and sophistication” of China’s network. (more)

As USTR Jamieson Greer continues meeting with Canadian counterparts, the core issues are unresolved because -in part- Canada is incapable of reconciling the problem.  The Canadian team have reported their intention to remain in the U.S. through the weekend hoping to continue negotiations.  However, there is little optimism so long as the great pretending continues.

President Trump and USTR Greer have continually said they want Canada to go and seek additional trade agreements with other countries, in part to break the dependency on the USA and in part so that Canada can learn the lessons of reciprocity.

For several decades Canada has used their access to the U.S. market without reciprocity.  In fact, one of the great admissions by former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was openly telling President Trump their unilateral trade reliance was not something the Canadian government was capable of correcting.  This led to President Trump remarking that if Canada is going to act like a state inside the U.S. economic system, then Canada should become the 51st state.

The issue is seemingly irreconcilable, and the Canadian govt continue to gaslight the Canadian people on the core issues at the heart of the matter.

Assumption Day in France: History, Traditions .

 

Assumption Day in France is celebrated every year on 15 August and remains one of the country’s most important Catholic feast days. 

Known in French as l’Assomption, it commemorates the Catholic belief that the Virgin Mary was taken body and soul into heavenly glory at the end of her earthly life.

Although France is a secular country, it has kept Assumption Day as a public holiday. For practising Catholics, the date is marked by Masses, pilgrimages and processions. For many other people, it is simply a welcome day off in the middle of the summer holidays.  

 

 

The vow of Louis XIII in 1638

Assumption Day acquired particular significance in France during the reign of Louis XIII.

On 10 February 1638, the king declared that he was placing himself, the royal family and the kingdom of France under the protection of the Virgin Mary. This declaration became known as the Vow of Louis XIII — le Vœu de Louis XIII.

The king ordered processions to be held throughout the kingdom on 15 August. He also promised to build a new high altar dedicated to the Virgin Mary in Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. 

 

 The royal couple had been married for more than twenty years without producing a surviving heir.  

 

 

Later in 1638, Queen Anne of Austria gave birth to the future Louis XIV. The child was given the name Louis-Dieudonné, meaning “Louis, the gift of God”.

The long-awaited birth strengthened the symbolic association between the royal family, the Virgin Mary and the feast of the Assumption.  

 

 

The first major Parisian procession associated with the vow took place at Notre-Dame on 15 August 1638. The vow continues to be proclaimed at the cathedral during Assumption celebrations today.

The famous painting The Vow of Louis XIII, completed by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres in 1824, depicts the king offering his crown and sceptre to the Virgin Mary.
