Tony Fauci is going to join his pantheon, just not the one he wanted.

Tony Fauci was asked a long time ago if the risk of a lab leak was worth the possible upside of gain-of-function virus research. He said that he did believe so. There are those who claim that Lyme Disease as well as SARS were also outcomes of lab research where things got out, and people got sick. Every activity in life involves risk. Some risks, like crossing the street or eating an egg, seem to be very low. Others, like flying a B-17 bomber over a ball-bearing factory in Schweinfurt during World War II, come with enormous potential downside. It would appear that Tony Fauci not only funded the Wuhan virus lab but may have contributed to the creation of the Frankenvirus via a lab run by him in the American northwest. So while other dictators listed above actually murdered people who opposed them, Fauci’s hubris and incompetence got millions of people killed worldwide. Does his lack of intent make him ineligible?

The problem with Tony Fauci and many others in the biomedical sphere is one of religion switching. A God-fearing person might make a different calculation of risk than one whose religion is SCIENCE and who sees himself as the personal embodiment of the high priest of this modern faith. A responsible and somewhat modest scientist would say, yes, I would love to know what would happen if we made the following changes to a natural virus, but I cannot take responsibility for the possible disaster that may occur. A megalomaniac like Fauci can only think about his future Nobel Prize and his name being said in the same breath with Einstein, Curie, and Salk. It’s easy to take risks when the risk is actually on somebody else. If I decide to weaken my fence, where the worst thing that can happen is that it falls on my neighbor’s daffodils, then I might be disposed to give it a try. Fauci talked big in Congress about gain-of-function being worth the risk and no doubt felt the same way with the completely untried mRNA vaccines because somebody else would get screwed if things went sideways — which they certainly did. The current head of the FDA, Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, whom Fauci trashed in his diary (and who the hell writes a diary on a government-issued computer? Duh?), said that there were three problems with the Pfizer and Moderna products:

1. We don’t know where the mRNA strands go in the body.

2. We don’t know how many copies of the spike protein they produce.

3. We don’t know if all of the spike proteins are complete or defective.

In his summary of the problem with injecting mRNA into a person and hoping for the best, he made more sense than cowboy Fauci, who pulled out hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin in order to allow for the emergency usage of the new vaccines. Fauci didn’t care if people got sick and died. He at one point admitted in his diary that vaccinated people were still getting sick and transmitting the virus. Fauci was the high priest! He will do as he pleases and he cannot be wrong! And if people die, as in any battle, victory does not come for free. He overstated the lethality of COVID, with its actual risk being similar to the annual flu. Lives were lost. Lives were destroyed. Businesses went under. Students went down the tubes. Societies went south. Just as the British still had war-damaged parts of the country in the early 1950s, we too have destroyed parts of society because Tony Fauci, the Bat Lady, and their friends decided that the real God wasn’t enough and that they would play god by making a natural virus more deadly to human beings. Fauci’s virus buddies immediately saw the engineered “furin cleavage site” that allowed for stronger binding to human cells, but like Hitler’s generals, they knew when to shut up and defer to the Great Man. Who wants to be selling newspapers on the streets when he can have endless NIH grant money and maybe some patent royalties for just saying that the pangolins are the culprit?

I remember reading a book long ago that discussed the diary of the camp commandant of Auschwitz, Rudolf Hoss. In one entry, he wrote that they had a morning selection of Russian prisoners whom they murdered. In the afternoon, he ate with his family, and they had a delicious meal of rabbit and wine. The author of the book could not understand the juxtaposition of outright brutality next to complete enjoyment of a lovely meal. But what of Herr Fauci? He could write at the top of his entry how many people died in various countries and then list all of the A-listers on a Zoom call arranged by Dr. Kim Kardashian. The numbers at the top were Stalin’s famous statistics: faceless people, many old and sick, who died alone, removed physically from their loved ones. The bottom was the real deal: I am Fauci I, king of biomedicine! These are my loving fans, and I shared with them my wisdom and godly insights. Long live Fauci!

In Hebrew, the expression “lo nisbal” refers to someone who is so into himself that nobody else can stand him. Tony Fauci took the Moderna vaccine on TV and then had a heart embolism. We have a tradition that Pharaoh used to enter the Nile to do his business so that his people would think that he is a god and does not need the bathroom; so too, Fauci did not announce his illness and its possible ties to the drug he was peddling. No, he quietly had himself treated, and like doctors around Hitler, they knew that they had best keep their mouths shut. The emperor has no clothes? The emperor has a blood clot, but nobody on the outside may be allowed to know.

Every field has its practitioners with massive egos. Boeing refused to admit that a fault in a cargo door would allow it to open during flight; only the engineer parents of a young man lost to such an accident could force them to admit and then redesign the door. The problem with Fauci was that his hubris was connected to the safety and well-being of several billion people. I can be a jerk and anger a couple hundred people. Fauci funded, through his buddy, gain-of-function research that got out of the lab, destroyed the world economy, and led to millions dead and injured. He sat like a fool in the Senate. He could not admit what he did, as maybe the pardon given by Joe Biden’s auto-pen is not as solid as he would hope. Also, it would be a killer for his reputation to confirm the evidence trail he left on his government computer diary. So he pleaded the Fifth on the color of his tie and what he ate that morning. Rand Paul might still get him via the DOJ for obstruction, though I don’t expect him to spend a night in jail.

We are generally enamored by things we know very little about. Someone outside of Boeing would be amazed by the company’s products and history. Go inside and see the cost-cutting-driven engineering failures. My business partner and I once did some Anthrax testing at an Israeli national lab. Our host brought out a vaccination strain to test. The day after our visit, he called to say that we had accidentally been working with live Anthrax. We had been sitting in his office, not in the Level 3 biolab down the hall. Accidents happen in science, and China is no place to expect Swiss lab protocols.

Iran And Russia: Ripe For A Cascading Failure?

The Berlin Wall’s fall is one of history’s most recognizable examples of a rapid, largely unforeseen cascading failure. On November 9, 1989, East German spokesman Günter Schabowski mistakenly announced that new travel rules would take effect “immediately.” Crowds rushed the checkpoints, overwhelmed confused border guards, and within hours the wall that had divided Germany for twenty-eight years had effectively fallen.

While the writing was on the wall (pun intended), what no one foresaw, including Western intelligence services and most scholars, was the speed and the trigger: a single bungled press conference that sent border crossings into bedlam. Twenty-four hours later, the world had changed. In retrospect, all the signs were there that East Germany had become systemically fragile. Collapse was possible and, ultimately, likely.

Engineers describe this as a cascading failure: a system that appears stable until one relatively small event reveals weaknesses that have accumulated over time. In geopolitics, authoritarian governments can behave much the same way. They often appear strongest immediately before they become most vulnerable because they suppress the very information that would reveal how fragile they have become.

Iran (especially) and Russia are exhibiting many of those characteristics today.

East Germany’s problems were hardly a secret. Economic stagnation, declining legitimacy, dependence on Soviet support, elite infighting, failing information control, growing public disbelief, and security forces increasingly uncertain about enforcing repression had all been building for years. None of those problems alone brought down the regime. Together, they created a system waiting for a triggering event. One bungled press conference simply released years of accumulated pressure, much like a small breach causing a dam to collapse.

In Iran, beyond the factors already discussed, theocracy also contends with sanctions, inflation, widespread unemployment, and systemic corruption, all of which contribute to a sense of economic exhaustion. Now add major war, worsening water shortages, and visibly assertive women refusing to accept the regime’s dictates. Protests repeatedly break out despite being met with draconian repression, including the killing of thousands of protesters and the public hanging of young people as warnings to everyone else. Underneath it all lies an immense seething reservoir of public dissatisfaction.

Many Iranians have questions about who is actually running the country, as the newest Supreme Leader has been effectively absent almost since his naming and may no longer be in the country or even alive. Who is running Iran? There appears to be an underlying power struggle between the clerics and the IRGC, with internal rivalries becoming increasingly visible.

Militarily, Iran continues to portray itself as a regional power capable of confronting anyone. Reality tells a different story. American and Israeli aircraft now roam Iranian skies with remarkable freedom, destroying targets at will. Hezbollah has been badly weakened, with Lebanon executing an unprecedented agreement with Israel. Hamas has been reduced to little more than a terrorist nuisance inside Gaza. Iran’s allies in Syria and Iraq are shadows of what they once were, and even the Houthis more often decide for themselves when—and whether—Iran’s interests deserve support.

Iran is increasingly a government maintaining control through ever more violent coercion rather than consent of the governed.

Russia shares many of the same structural weaknesses as East Germany and Iran. The difference is that the Kremlin continues to try to convince its citizens that everything remains under control, even as the costs of the war become difficult to conceal. Russia is losing men and material faster than it can replace them. Russia has seen over 1.4 million soldiers killed or wounded since the war with Ukraine began. Russia’s losses in Ukraine are unprecedented for any modern nation since WWII. Putin has not been able to hide either the reality of war or its consequences from the Russian population. Geopolitical cracks have begun to appear.

Ukraine’s increasing long-range strikes are creating hours-long gas lines all over Russia and forcing Russia to buy diesel fuel from India for the first time. Sanctions are biting, labor shortages are existential, inflation is accelerating past 6%, and there is a shortage of goods and services in many areas of the country. The war can no longer be called a “Special Military Operation,” as Russians feel the bite more each day. Russia is currently spending 7.5% of its GDP on the military, and that figure is also increasing. In the last two years, Russia has had a net outflow of 450,000 people—people are voting with their feet, with over 1.3 million emigrating to date.

Political stability may also be more fragile than it appears. The Prigozhin rebellion demonstrated that thousands of armed Russians were willing to march toward Moscow with Russians fighting Russians on Russian soil. The revolt ultimately failed, but it exposed fractures within the regime that few believed possible only days earlier.

History repeatedly shows that authoritarian systems often fail in nonlinear ways. Romania’s communist regime collapsed almost overnight. The Soviet Union dissolved with lightning speed. The Arab Spring swept through governments once considered permanent. Afghanistan’s government disappeared in a matter of days. The specific triggers are frequently different. The underlying vulnerabilities remain remarkably similar.

For Iran, the trigger could be a succession crisis, another nationwide protest, military defeat, economic panic, or an elite split. For Russia, it could be a battlefield collapse, financial crisis, regional separatism, another elite revolt, or uncertainty surrounding Vladimir Putin’s leadership.

That distinction matters because Washington often prepares for gradual change while history repeatedly delivers sudden, unexpected change. Planning for collapsing governments, securing loose nuclear weapons, managing refugee flows, anticipating regional instability, and recognizing unexpected strategic opportunities deserve far more attention than they currently receive. The only predictable element is that history repeatedly produces unpredictable events.

On November 8, 1989, the Berlin Wall looked permanent. Twenty-four hours later it had become a tourist attraction.

Neither Iran nor Russia is likely to collapse tomorrow. They may endure for years, or they may not. But history reminds us that systems under sufficient internal strain rarely announce when they have reached the breaking point until they do.

War Dept. Taps Defense Giants to Supercharge Missile Interceptor Production in Deals Worth Billions

As the conflict in Iran continues and panicans fret that we’re running out of munitions, the War Department has come to terms with defense Industry heavyweights Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman to ramp up production of key components for our anti-missile defense systems. 

The framework deals between the administration and the companies are worth tens of billions:

The deals aim to quadruple output of Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) interceptor structural components and support a threefold increase in Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3) production, according to a War Department release Monday.

"Building the Arsenal of Freedom requires robust, dynamic supply chains at every level of the industrial base," Michael Duffey, undersecretary for acquisition and sustainment, wrote in a statement. "Framework agreements with munition components suppliers like Northrop Grumman are vital to accelerating the tripling of PAC-3 and quadrupling of THAAD interceptor production."

Northrop's new framework alone is worth $3 billion:

Northrop Grumman posted a statement on their website Monday describing their plans:

• Accelerating PAC-3® MSE Solid Rocket Motor: Northrop Grumman will accelerate production of the Patriot Advanced Capability-3 Missile Segment Enhancement (PAC-3 MSE), to meet the increasing global demand. Under the $2 billion framework agreement, the company will supply essential components, including solid rocket motors and ignition safety devices, supporting the nation’s integrated air and missile defense.
• Quadrupling Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) Component Production: The $1 billion framework agreement will enable Northrop Grumman to significantly increase monthly deliveries of THAAD components over seven years.

The company added that with nearly 100,000 employees and over 30 million square feet of manufacturing space — 500 football fields worth — they’re ready to keep our military armed. 

Lockheed Martin, meanwhile, already had a huge contract that it is modifying with the new deal.

Lockheed announced a seven-year contract modification for up to $53.86 billion for PAC-3s. The award brings the total multiyear contract value to $58.62 billion, following the $4.7 billion UCA [undefinitized contract action] awarded in April for year one.

The agreements were developed with the Munitions Acceleration Council, the Economic Defense Unit, the Missile Defense Agency and the Office of the Under Secretary for Acquisition and Sustainment, the War Department said.

Ronald Reagan once famously said, “In the real world, peace through strength must be our motto.” In this day and age, missile interceptor technology is one way to achieve that strength, and it looks like we’re soon going to have a lot more of it.

'No Authority': Federal Judge Blocks NY's Anti-ICE Mask Law in Big Blow to Kathy Hochul

New York State’s continuing quest to kneecap efforts by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in dealing with the illegal alien crisis that former President Joe Biden brought us took a big blow Monday when a federal judge said the state did not have the conditional authority to order a mask ban for federal agents. 

The ruling did also say, however, that the state could ban masks for its own law enforcement agents and continue to refuse to cooperate with ICE.

The agency has argued repeatedly that agents have been subject to violence, threats, and doxing as the Democrats’ anti-ICE rhetoric has maintained a fever pitch since Donald Trump returned to the Oval Office.

Empire State Gov. and illegal immigrant enabler Kathy Hochul will not be pleased:

A federal judge has struck down a New York law prohibiting federal officers from wearing masks, a setback for the state’s efforts to stop a notorious aspect of the Trump administration’s aggressive immigration enforcement campaign.

The Constitution’s Supremacy Clause does not allow New York to regulate federal law enforcement activities, District Judge Mae A. D’Agostino said in a ruling Monday.

Ah, the old Supremacy Clause — Article VI, Clause 2 in the United States Constitution, which the Democrats have continually pretended doesn’t exist in their efforts to “resist” Trump and his agenda. Let’s let the Founders themselves explain it:

“This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any Thing in the Constitution or Laws of any State to the Contrary notwithstanding.”

Listen, I didn’t even go to law school, but that seems pretty self-explanatory to me. Although the state can tell local law enforcement how to act, they have no such jurisdiction over the feds, Judge D’Agostino ruled.

“New York cannot impose its own uniform requirements on federal agents simply because it disagrees with how the Federal Government is exercising its authority,” D’Agostino wrote.

It’s another win on the issue for President Trump, and another big setback for anti-ICE Democrats:

The decision is a victory for the Trump administration, which has successfully challenged similar laws attempting to force Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to stop wearing masks and display their badges while making arrests.

A federal judge blocked a similar mask ban in California, and the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals went on to block the state’s law requiring federal officers to wear visible badge numbers and names. The administration has also challenged similar laws in Connecticut, New Jersey, Virginia and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

'They Kept Me Like a Slave': Teen Says Becerra's Child Migrant Program Ended in Sexual Abuse

On Monday, the latest video dropped, exposing the cruelty and calculation of former Biden Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra in his oversight of the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR). But instead of whistleblower testimony, this new release is from an alleged victim of the system that Becerra built. 

These large-scale refugee ORR encampments were the brainchild of then-HHS Secretary Becerra, who is running against Republican Steve Hilton for the California governorship, and Becerra has bragged about the operation, comparing the farming of minors through the facility as an "assembly line."

As RedState reported, Hilton has been releasing these testimonies from whistleblowers who are exposing the ORR unaccompanied minor encampments as centers that facilitated child trafficking, slave labor, and sex trafficking under the guise of connecting these minors with family members or sponsors within the United States.  

Hilton addressed this thusly:

Juana Rebecca Pérez Santay, one of the alleged victims of Becerra's assembly line, was only 17 years old when she came across the Southern border in May of 2021. Santay said, "Xavier Becerra failed to protect us. He failed me because he didn't protect me." 

Santay was farmed like cattle through the resettlement center, and then placed in the hands of a supposedly vetted sponsor through HHS's ORR program. Instead of being safe, Santay wound up in the hands of slave laborers and was almost raped. 

Santay, who does not speak English, spoke in Spanish. Santay said a social worker accompanied her as she was placed on a resettlement flight to connect Santay with her sponsor. Instead of actually meeting up with the sponsor, the social worker dumped Santay at the airport and left. Santay said she called the number she was given and was picked up by three men who took her to a house.

Santay was told by the woman who ran the house that she was here to work 20 hours a week making food. Instead, Santay worked seven days a week for almost 24-hour shifts, and was forbidden to touch the food she was making. Santay said she was deprived of water, and if she complained, she was threatened with deportation. 

"I have been sexually abused. I slept on a ceramic floor, in a room with four men who were sleeping there," Santay said.

When a drunken man came into the house where Santay was being imprisoned, he honed in on her and decided he wanted to sleep next to her. Then he proceeded to try to rape her. The lady sponsor told the young woman to let the man rape her because, "he's a drunk and he doesn't know what he's doing." 

Santay concluded: "Xavier Becerra failed me because he never cared about my safety. I ended up in the hands of child traffickers, and I was almost raped. They kept me like a slave; they didn't let me talk to my family. If he were to become governor of California, it would be horrible, because I would not want what happened to me to happen to other children."

It is even more maddening hearing her calmly speak about these horrors.

Migrant girl sent to child traffickers after Becerra dismantled HHS vetting procedures. Forced to work 20 hour days—no pay, no water. Slept on ceramic floor surrounded by men. Sexually assaulted.

Certain members in the House of Representatives are on a campaign to remove sexual predators from their ranks, and this is a righteous mission. Anyone who seeks to victimize others should never have power over other people's lives and the decisions that they make. 

Yet, if Californians choose Xavier Becerra, they will allow a man who facilitated the trafficking, abuse, and modern-day slavery of young men and women, and then lost 300,000 of them without thinking twice about how to recover them, to control the affairs of the nation's most populous state with purportedly the fourth largest economy in the world.

This ought not be. Accountability should be demanded before someone ascends to a higher office, not after they are given the reins.

Dems’ Open Border Policy Is A Form Of Hybrid Warfare—Against The American People

The invasion of Ceuta, Spain, by Moroccans 

was a state-on-state conflict. 

In America, the enemy is within.

The invasion last week of the Spanish city of Ceuta by some 60,000 Moroccans, mostly young military-age men, was a useful demonstration of how mass migration and indeed entire populations can be weaponized and deployed in what amounts to hybrid warfare against sovereign nations.

In this particular case, the reason for the deployment likely has to do with the Moroccan state’s longstanding irredentist claims in North Africa, which include the coastal enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla—the plazas de soberanía along the North African coast that have belonged to Spain for more than four centuries but which Morocco has claimed since its independence in 1956.

My friend Joshua Treviño has a useful recap of the relevant history of this simmering conflict over at National Review, but the upshot is that “the Moroccan political project has from the start been focused on what it perceives to be the completion of its full territorial control over Africa’s northwestern corner.”

Whatever the eventual outcome of the invasion—and to be clear, what happened in Ceuta should be understood as such—Rabat’s motivations are at least comprehensible in classical geopolitical terms. The Moroccan state believes those territories belong to Morocco, and is willing to deploy coercive, if irregular, force to reclaim them. Spanish authorities have responded in kind, deploying the military and declaring that all 60,000 migrant invaders will be removed.

Insofar as the conflict here is fundamentally one of state versus state—over territorial claims, no less—the crisis in Ceuta has a decidedly 20th-century character about it. But the use of migrants as an invasion force is something new, and gives it a pointed relevance both to our century and our situation in America, where migrant invasions along our southern border are not primarily the work of a hostile foreign state, but of the Democrat Party.

The shocking reality is that the party responsible for orchestrating and encouraging the illegal border-crossing of some 12 million foreign nationals into the United States during the Biden administration was not the Mexican state, nor even the cartels that function as proxies for Mexico’s ruling Morena party. Yes, the cartels and their smuggling networks profited greatly from illegal immigration from 2021 to 2025. And yes, Mexican officialdom was scandalously complicit in the mass human trafficking operation that ensued during that period.

But the primary responsible party came from within our country, not outside it. If what we suffered was an invasion (and it was), then it was an invasion that relied for its success on treachery. The gates were not battered down, they were opened from the inside. The first day he was in office, President Biden rescinded via executive order nearly every border policy the first Trump administration had put in place. Those policies had reduced illegal border crossings to near-historic lows, as they have again done in Trump’s second term.

What ensued after Biden did this is well-known. Incentivized by explicit, official promises from the Biden administration that there would be no real enforcement of our immigration laws, that if you got into the country you would be allowed to stay, record numbers of foreigners from every corner of the globe rushed over our border. In some cases, the rush created the potential for a humanitarian crisis. In September 2021, for example, some 15,000 Haitians crossed the Rio Grande and set up a massive encampment under a bridge near Del Rio, Texas. The shocking images of the encampment captured by news media forced the Biden White House to take swift action to break up the camp. But that was merely to control the PR narrative, not to stem the steady onrush of migrants over the border.

It’s important to understand that these were not policy blunders by the Democrats. It’s not as if they didn’t know what would happen if they loosened or removed entirely Trump’s border controls. They knew full well, and did it on purpose. If what Morocco did in Ceuta could rightly be considered an act of war against Spain, the same could be said for what the Biden administration did to the American people from 2021 to 2025.

What makes it more disturbing than what happened last week in Ceuta is that the Democrats, unlike Rabat, were pursuing irredentist claims not on behalf of the their own people but on behalf of the global south. They effectively launched a foreign invasion of the United States, the ultimate object of which is to wrest control of the country from its native inhabitants by overwhelming the country with illegal immigrants.

And they are going to do it again just as soon as they have the chance. As my colleague Brianna Lyman noted last week, the invasion of Ceuta is a preview and a warning: “If Democrats (and yes, that includes the socialists) regain control of Congress in November or the White House in 2028, they will not need four full years to reopen the border and flood our country with Third World migrants. Ceuta should serve as a warning about how quickly things can be destroyed.”

But it should also serve as another kind of warning: that in America, the real danger comes not from foreign powers or cartels or nefarious nongovernmental organizations that profit off mass illegal immigration, but from the Democrat Party itself. Democrats want something far more sinister: they want to dislodge and replace their own people with other peoples, an invading force of foreigners who, they believe, will be more amenable to permanent Democrat control than us stubborn Americans.

France wildfires reveal hundreds of WW2 shells in village

 

Wildfires in the south of France have revealed a cache of 400 historic shells and munitions in the village of Le Porge, according to local authorities.

Blasts during the fires, initially thought to be exploding gas cylinders, may have been World War Two explosives detonated by the heat, the local fire commander told local media.

More than 100 explosions were heard on the second night of the fire, Mayor Martial Zaninetti told French news outlet France Info, likening it to "the sound of war". 

 

 

Demining operations have now seen most residents return to their homes, however the mayor has said certain areas are still off-limits. More than 180 houses in the area were destroyed by the wildfire.

"There were ammunition depots buried in land within our municipality, but we didn't know it, and they exploded", Zaninetti told France Info. 

 

 

In a statement on Instagram on Monday, the mayor wrote that access to the ocean, a campsite, and the village of La Jenny remained off limits.

The historic weapons were both German and French and included mortar shells and anti-tank shells, French media reported.

Their discovery comes after a forest fire ravaged the Gironde area, which has now been brought under control after burning for about 10 days.

Pictures from Le Porge on Monday showed families picking through the burned remains of their homes.

He described them going "to the right, to the left" and that there was "even one that went through a house".  

 

 

On Monday, French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu thanked firefighters for their efforts saying "France has stood firm in the face of an unprecedented crisis".

He highlighted the battle against the fires had entered a "new phase" in the Gironde region, saying "the evacuated individuals are gradually returning to their homes".

Wildfires have raged across Europe over the two weeks, primarily in France and Spain, where more than 330,000 people were evacuated.

France was one of the worst affected regions, with an area of 42,000 hectares burnt in the south-west, making it one of the largest forest fires since World War Two.
