CNN: Those Chants About Killing White Farmers Don't Really Mean That

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa pushed back on President Trump’s concerns about reports of white genocide in South Africa. For years, white farmers have been attacked and brutally murdered. It doesn’t help that the government is pushing through a bill that some say legalizes land seizures. It’s why 59 Afrikaner farmers were accepted as refugees, which sent the media into a tailspin. This story should be a national discussion, but here we are.

Trump showed Ramaphosa footage of the rallies calling for the mass killing of whites. And, like clockwork, the media lost their minds. CNN even had folks on trying to spin the chants, like saying the people shouting ‘kill all the whites’ really don’t mean that. It’s an anti-apartheid chant. Sure, but people are dying, too. The best reaction was that Trump made these claims without evidence or along those lines.

Let’s Roll the Dice on Primarying These RINOs

Sometimes you have to be cautious, and sometimes you have to be audacious, and the correlation of forces and events happening right now gives us America First Republicans an opportunity that could pay big dividends in November 2026 if we are audacious. Instead of betting on incumbents, the safest choice, there are two major targets for a Senate primary from the right. We should go for it. It will be risky, but it’s worth the risk. We can build a stronger, more cohesive Senate majority while also demonstrating the fate of spineless Republicans who dare to defy the will of the people. I say we roll the dice.

I’ve previously explained why Thom Tillis deserves to be primaried. He’s one of those guys you can always count on not to be able to count on. The guy is a buffoon, but he’s our buffoon, and if challenging him would put that North Carolina seat at an unreasonable risk, we’ve got to stick with him and endure another six years of his tiresome backstabbing. But it’s becoming clear that the risk is not as risky as we may have thought because there’s a candidate who can kick him into the obscurity he so richly deserves. Perhaps it’s worth being audacious and seeing if we can not only win but win with somebody who’s not a goofy half-wit sporting the same kind of scraggly beard recently popular with the likes of Chris Murphy and Pete Buttigieg. Every time I see a picture of Tillis these days, he looks like a middle-aged dentist who just got divorced, bought a Porsche 911, and moved into a condo in Marina del Rey with his 31-year-old hygienist, Sherilyn.

We also have a chance to do better than John Cornyn, the painfully generic Republican squish from my soon-to-be adopted state of Texas. Texas would be a huge prize for the Democrats. They’ve been furiously working to win a statewide seat in Texas for decades. Cornyn is bad, and more than that, he’s annoying. He looks like the stuff-shirt father of every girl in every 80s teen movie. But if Cornyn is the only one who can hold the seat, then we have to stick with him, as awful as this gun control-supporting, less shiny version of Mitt Romney is. However, the facts on the ground indicate that maybe we can not only keep the seat but get a senator who is more interested in our agenda than the one embraced by corporate donors, the Washington Post editorial page, and the Bushie stiffs he hangs out with at the country club.

We should not primary incumbents lightly; we should think it through coldly and dispassionately. First, we need to look at the political environment in November 2026. If it’s bad for Republicans, we should lean toward sticking with incumbents. Senate races are much more volatile than House races, where incumbency is usually determinative, and backing a soft incumbent is sometimes the smart play. And we need to be smart, not emotional.

But here’s the thing. Trump is doing great. Look at your 401(k). Unless you sold it off in a panic, it’s pretty close to where it was before Trump launched the tariffs. The tariffs have been paying off – we’re getting good trade deals. Inflation is way down, and jobs are up. Wall Street doesn’t think we’re going to have a recession anymore. If the GOP manages to get the big, beautiful bill passed, America will be pumping next year. And if the economy is pumping, that will help anybody with an (R) behind his name – even the right-wing winner of a primary in North Carolina or Texas. If Trump comes through with tax cuts, peace overseas, closed borders, and a banging economy, we’ll clean up in the midterms. And that means we have the option to try to do better than just limbo under the low bar that is the mediocre likes of Tillis and Cornyn.

Second, we have to look at the incumbents. Are they even likely to win? I’m no expert on North Carolina or Texas, so I reached out to people who are. I’ve also looked at some of the polls, though you should generally trust polls as far as you can throw the governor of Illinois. The bottom line is that Tillis and Cornyn are vulnerable in general. Why are they vulnerable? Because conservatives hate them. Why do conservatives hate them? Because they hate conservatives. Tillis stabbed Trump in the back on Ed Martin, and he’s always there, in the background, being a problem. Nobody in North Carolina likes him. They tolerate him, or at least they did. Will the base come out for him next year? Do you want to risk the Senate on that?

It’s the same for Cornyn. The only thing he’s known for is crossing the aisle to help Democrats do things like gun control. What kind of Republican has anything to do with Democratic gun control proposals? A bad one, a Republican just waiting for the chance to please the regime media by supporting some idiotic comprehensive immigration amnesty bill, refusing to cut spending, or some other atrocity. We don’t need mavericks. We need soldiers who follow orders. We need them to vote reliably, the way we want, and to make the public case for what we want, not to grandstand and posture while clutching pearls because Trump offends their tender, girlish sensibilities.

The problem for Tillis and Cornyn is that they’ve done so much grandstanding and posturing while clutching pearls that their constituents are tired of them. Both races will draw a ton of money and a ton of attention, so every vote counts. They’ve managed to alienate a bunch of Republican voters who can’t control their gag reflex yet again and pull the lever for these guys. We need candidates that the base doesn’t hate, but that normal people will vote for.

Here’s what voters need to do in North Carolina. Replace him with a North Carolina congressman named Patrick Harrigan; he’s a freaking superstar. Don’t believe me. Listen for yourself to his recent visit with the fellas from "Ruthless." He looks like he’s out of central casting, he’s young, and he’s not having a weird midlife crisis. He was a West Pointer, and, despite that, I totally support him. A legit Afghanistan Green Beret war hero, this guy gets it. He’s the first guy I’ve seen who sees what Xi and Putin are doing to America as the same thing America did to the Soviet Union – trying to bankrupt us in an arms race. He is solid. He won’t fold like a house of cards as Tillis will if the WaPo threatens to say mean things about him. He’s also in a safe red seat, so we won’t lose it if he runs.

I do need to know more about him. He grew up in Wyoming and San Diego, and I need to know his favorite Mexican place before I commit (Roberto’s; I will also accept Alberto’s). I’ve also been told he shares some consultants with Thom Tillis. If so, he needs to find new ones who don’t want to go down with a sinking ship. This mission is not optional. His country needs him. He has answered the call before. He needs to answer it again. North Carolina deserves a senator like Patrick Harrigan.

And Texas deserves an upgrade in the form of its current Attorney General, Ken Paxton, who has already announced. The Republican base in Texas loves him. The Republican establishment, not so much. But the last time we had an outsider rebel against the GOP establishment in the Lone Star State, we ended up with Ted Cruz. That worked out well. Maybe we can repeat that success.

My sources say that Paxton is absolutely competitive in the general and point out that no good Democrat candidate for Senate has announced. Maybe he’ll get lucky and perennial loser Beto will run again, hoping that a coalition of pinkos, wine women, and furries will sweep him into office on a tsunami of Hollywood dough. I’ve been told that a competitive Texas race will cost $500 million, about as much as a Qatari 747. But Ken Paxton knows how to raise money. Texas will always be a long shot for any Democrat, but if this is a marquee race, the race will draw cash that could be better spent on other seats around the country. In other words, the upside is not just an upgrade in the Texas seat; Paxton might help us win other contested seats around the country.

Our goal is winning with the most conservative who can win, the old Buckley Rule articulated before National Review turned into whatever the hell it is now. It is usually good enough to merely keep these seats, but is good enough really good enough this cycle? Not if we have a reasonable chance of doing better. We’ve got two reasonable chances right here. Sometimes you have to play it safe. Sometimes you have to be audacious, and it’s looking like that time is now.

Race Fatigue in the United States

The reaction of the American left and its adjacent black political class to the arrival of 59 white refugees in South Africa, combined with ever-accelerating racist rhetoric and demands from America’s black population has further exposed the depth of anti-white racism in the United States and accelerated race fatigue among the vast majority of the American population.

The Episcopal Church Migration Ministries, contractually obligated to the federal government to assist in resettling refugees regardless of race or nationality since 1988, has because of a few white South Africans refugees declaring “In light of our church’s steadfast commitment to social justice and reconciliation…we are unable to take this step.”

Bishop Sean W. Rowe, in abetting the anti-white rhetoric of the Black political class, said: “It’s against what we stand for to help white refugees fleeing South Africa.” Further, “We can’t be ourselves in the Episcopal Church and take this step of resettling white Afrikaners from South Africa.”

A CNN panel, consisting primarily of black former Obama and Biden staffers and dyed-in-the-wool leftists, declared that being victims of crimes does not entitle white South Africans to asylum in the United States and that they are not the type of immigrants we want in our country because they are white.

These openly racist comments are not surprising, given that there is among the black political class a constant and endless drumbeat of anti-white rhetoric from virtually every black member of Congress, state legislators, mayors, and many of those now seeking political office. Almost all of them are enthusiastically supported by the majority of black media outlets and websites.

Rep. Summer Lee (D-PA) recently claimed, “White supremacy is rampant in this country, just look at the current administration…they have contributed to racial terrorism.”

Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) offered her own spin: “The United States [i.e. the white population] owes us a debt; we need reparations now.” She cited “emboldened white supremacy” as a catalyst for the introduction of reparation legislation costing $14 trillion (or 2.5 years of all taxes collected by the Federal Government).

According to Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX),

We right now have a white supremacist sitting in the White House. He is backed by other white supremacists. If you really want to know who are the criminals are in this country, you can google it. The people that commit 80 percent of the most violent crimes in this country are white supremacists, yet for whatever reason, they sit and serve at the pleasure of the president.

In fact, per FBI data, in 2023, blacks, who make up 12% of the population, committed 46% of all violent crimes.

Martin Luther King would be aghast at the current state of race relations in America, as race-based hatred now permeates much of the black population, abetted by their white sycophants among the far left. Their underlying belief is that whites are not only historically unredeemable racists but, as Matt Walsh of The Daily Wire observed, “They want us to believe that white people are somehow not native or indigenous to any place on earth.” Therefore, whites are deserving of never-ending disdain and persecution for their innumerable past “sins.”

For forty-five years (1964 to 2009), the United States experienced noteworthy progress in race relations. Thanks to the efforts of individual citizens in their communities throughout all regions of the country, this nation was well on its way to racial healing. In 2008, only 18% of Americans were greatly concerned or worried about the state of race relations in the country, as nearly 70% thought that relations between whites and blacks were very or somewhat good.

In 2009, the most divisive and societally destructive president in American history, Barack Obama, came into office determined to reverse this trend by manipulating the black citizenry into abandoning racial harmony. To do so, he maliciously demonized the white population. He succeeded in fanning the dying embers of racism into a potential national conflagration.

Thanks to Obama and the media’s incessant drumbeat that so-called “white supremacy” is a major threat to black Americans, a Washington Post poll revealed that three-quarters of blacks are worried that a white person will attack them or someone they love. The reality is that Blacks perpetrate the vast majority of interracial crime. Meanwhile, nearly as many blacks, 70 percent, believe that half or more of all white people “hold white supremacist beliefs.”

A Rasmussen poll exposed the inevitable and disturbing reality that only 54% of blacks think it’s ok to be white. Race-based hatred and discrimination now appear to pervade the bulk of the black population. This same mindset is also pervasive within far too many of the nation’s private and government institutions.

As a former participant in the Civil Rights Movement, I can say with certainty that those people, whether black or white, who were determined to permanently eradicate institutional racism and discrimination, would be as angered and horrified at the racial exploitation and animosity rampant in today’s United States as I am. This outcome would have been unthinkable to the many white and black activists who sacrificed their lives in the 1960s Civil Rights Movement.

On July 4, 1963, as part of a predominantly white crowd of demonstrators intent on desegregating Gwynn Oak Amusement Park outside of Baltimore, I briefly met Michael Schwerner. In August of that summer, unbeknownst to me until many years later, we were both in attendance at the March in Washington for Jobs and Freedom highlighted by Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. Ten months later, he was brutally murdered by the Ku Klux Klan in Mississippi along with Andrew Goodman and James Chaney.

Both Schwerner and Goodman were white and among a considerable number of white citizens who gave their lives in order to permanently stamp out institutionalized racism and outright segregation. Untold thousands of others joined in protests, demonstrations, and voter drives, oftentimes at great financial and personal cost.

In 1960, nearly 89% of the American population identified as white. The involvement of a significant percentage of the white population was critical to the success of the Civil Rights Movement. Further, the goal of eliminating all vestiges of institutionalized racism would not have been achieved without the acquiescence of the vast majority of the white population.

The determination of a significant segment of America’s white population to right wrongs and live by the tenets of the Declaration of Independence stretches back to the abolition movements in the early nineteenth century. This determination culminated in a devastating and brutal Civil War, a war in which nearly 400,000 white Union soldiers died to end slavery. (The equivalent of over 5 million today.)

This nation cannot survive if 41 million Americans who identify as black are coerced into pitting themselves against 250 million Americans who identify as white (which includes 60-plus percent of Hispanics).

Both blacks and whites have much in common, and race relations are an ongoing challenge in any multi-racial society, but the black political and cultural leadership must stop its vile racist rhetoric, aimed at manipulating the black population into reveling in threats, violence, and intimidation against their fellow citizens. Race fatigue is beginning to take hold of the country.

If this continuous drumbeat of race hatred continues, then American society will assuredly descend into chaos as the white and other minority populations will abandon trying to coexist with the black population.

Democrats Always Rally Around The Worst People

Is there a single Democrat you’d trust to water your plants if you went out of town for a week? Is there one you’d ask to watch your kid, even for a minute, in an emergency? The answer you’re looking for is no, you would not. You wouldn’t because you have a brain; you wouldn’t because you’re not an idiot. But mostly you wouldn’t because you see with your own eyes who these people are and what these people do.

If you left your kid with them you’d expect a Democrat to try to “transition” them. Why? Why not? It’s what they do, it’s who they are. It’s what one of their top priorities are, and you can tell everything you need to know about someone by what their priorities are.

If you were an illegal alien, you might be able to trust a Democrat to water your plants. They love illegal aliens like Eric Swalwell likes Fang Fang. But like Swalwell, Democrats are constantly elevating the wrong people.

Ever heard of “LaMonica McIver”? Probably not. She only assumed office after her predecessor, another Democrat, died last year. She won the special election to replace Donald Payne Jr, then the general election in November with 74.4 percent of the vote, so you know you’re dealing with someone elected because of their party, not their intellect.

I would joke that “She’s single, fellas,” but she apparently not…poor bastard.

Here is where I would list her accomplishments, but she doesn’t have any. She hasn’t been in Congress long enough to have done anything, and she hasn’t. She’s not likely to, either. I mean, she’s a Democrat from Newark who served on the city council. Has anything good come out of Newark?

But she hit and shoved an ICE agent, which makes her wildly popular among Democrats.

How does this idiot, who is on video assaulting a federal officer? In a fundraising emails, LaMonica wrote, “The Trump administration just charged me with crimes for engaging in congressional oversight. This is a first -- and it’s a flashing red light for our democracy. I conducted oversight at an ICE facility in my district to do my job and my lawful right as a member of Congress. It’s clear: Trump and his administration are more concerned with punishing anyone who dares to speak up than transparency or oversight.”

Literally nothing she wrote there is true, but it doesn’t matter to Democrats. She was the aggressor, the Democrats there deliberately instigated the confrontation by trying to bring in the Mayor of Newark, who has not right or authority to enter a federal facility. Either the three Democrat Members of Congress there knew that and wanted a confrontation on video or they are collectively too stupid to know their jobs and the difference between Congress and a local mayor.

While I believe the first point is the most true, the second is undeniably true too.

LaMonica concludes, “We’re asking you to help us make as much noise as possible to ensure everyone courageous enough to speak truth to power is safe from political persecution. Please, Carole, split a donation between me and the DCCC before the midnight deadline to help my colleagues and I stand up for what’s right.”

Like I said, this moron won with almost three-quarters of the vote, she doesn’t need a dime to win reelection. But she wants the money so every trip she takes, every meal she eats, as many of her expenses as possible and be declared “campaign-related” and she doesn’t have to pay for them with her own money. That’s how these gerrymandered districts that send people with IQs smaller than their shoe size work. It’s perfectly legal corruption.

Why make a hero out of someone like McIver? Who else do Democrats have? The Democrats who did things for the benefit of the nation are long since dead; the party has outlived its usefulness. Any organization that would celebrate McIver, Swalwell, Jamie Raskin, Adam Schiff, etc., is not worth half a bucket of spit and rat hair, with all due respect to half buckets of spit and rat hair.

That this is who Democrats celebrate – raise up and a “face” of the party – should disgust every American. Then again, if you weren’t already disgusted by what Democrats have become, you haven’t been paying attention for decades.

Media STUNNED At Trump's Oval Office Stunt Trolling South African Presid...

Media analyst Mark Dice breaks down President Trump's unexpected confrontation with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa during what was supposed to be a routine diplomatic meeting in the Oval Office.

The encounter turned into an uncomfortable moment when Trump had television screens wheeled in to show clips of South African communist leader Julius Malema calling for the seizure of white farmers' land and his rhetoric against white South Africans.

Democrats’ Confederacy of Dunces

Three hundred years ago, the remarkable satirist Jonathan Swift , “When a true Genius appears in the World, you may know him by this infallible Sign; that the Dunces are all in Confederacy against him.”

Now, you might not be President Trump’s biggest fan.  Perhaps you are glad that he has returned to the White House but look forward to one of his capable lieutenants succeeding him in four years.  But I would argue that never has a larger collection of absolute idiots assembled to oppose an American leader, and for that reason alone, Donald J. Trump is probably a genius.  (And a very stable one at that!)

Right now, Democrats are waging a public relations campaign in support of criminal illegal aliens.  They are trying to make military-aged males with gang tattoos look sympathetic.  Sure, many of them have been accused of engaging in human-trafficking, drug-smuggling, identity theft, and fraud, but Democrats say these “new” Americans are just like us.  Sure, foreign nationals are regularly accused of rape and murder across the United States, but Democrats are quick to point out that “old” Americans commit heinous crimes, too.  Sure, illegal aliens are a huge financial burden to the prison system, welfare programs, health care, public schools, and local communities, but Democrats insist that it’s “racist” to tell the truth out loud.

While President Trump is rounding up violent criminals who have no right to be in the United States, Democrats are crying in front of cameras and promising to bring them back to a neighborhood near you.  In four months, they’ve shown more love for foreigners who broke into our country than they’ve ever shown for American victims of transnational cartels!

While moneyed “elites” are quietly engineering a 2028 White House run for Governor Hair Gel — er, I mean Gavin Newsom — polling among Democrats  that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is the real “leader” of the party.  What she lacks in brains, she makes up for in fakeness!  She grew up in a tony New York suburb but pretends to be a hardscrabble Bronx native.  She has an economics degree but knows nothing about economics.  She’s  to a redheaded white guy but finds “white supremacy” icky.  She claims to have needed  after the “trauma” of the January 6, 2021 Capitol protests but insists that she is strong enough to face down America’s nuclear-armed enemies without cowering under a desk.  She also  near parking lot fences — presumably because she believes that illegal immigrants will never find a good parking space.  At the same time, she believes that America’s “patriarchy” fears her because she is such a strong woman.  Maybe the scary “patriarchy” — much like her economics education — is a figment of her imagination.

Queen Alexandria has never been the brightest bulb, but she does shine when standing next to the even dimmer bulbs constituting her poorly lit “Squad.”  Ilhan Omar (didn’t she commit immigration fraud by ?), Ayanna Pressley, and Rashida Tlaib make “Alex from the Block” look like a Mensa member by comparison.  Emeritus members Jamaal Bowman (the moron who claimed to believe that a  would open an emergency exit) and Cori Bush dragged the “Squad’s” average I.Q. so far down that nobody seemed to really mind when they lost their cushy jobs in Congress.

Relatively new congresscritters (they don’t believe in biological sex, right?) Gregorio Casar, Summer Lee, and Delia Catalina Ramirez (uh-oh, look out, AOC, here comes DCR!) were apparently also eager to join the Bronx Belle’s “Squad.”  That’s a bit like jumping into a sinking lifeboat, isn’t it?  Interestingly, Ramirez is the  from Guatemala (her pregnant mom crossed the Rio Grande and gave birth to her in Chicago) and is married to one of Obama’s DACA recipients.  So, in the Democrats’ quixotic war against “white supremacy,” DCR makes AOC look like a piker!  If she is to have any chance with Democrats’ much-needed illegal alien vote, the pretend Puerto Rican might very well need to dump her red-headed fiancΓ© and find someone from central casting with a little more “undocumented” flare!

If “Squad” hopefuls turn out to be a bust, there’s always solo artist Jasmine Felicia Crockett (that’s right: her middle name really is “Felicia”!).  Even though AOC knows nothing of economics, I really thought she had cornered the market on saying dumb, racist things, until Congresswoman (but what’s a woman?) Crockett became the corporate news media’s poster girl (but what’s a girl?) for Democrats’ insurrection against the Trump administration.

The Democrat party is the most racist American political party that has ever existed.  It should have been disbanded after the Civil War and certainly should have been destroyed after a half-century of Jim Crow.  Instead, it managed to ply its intrinsic racism into Japanese internment, new forms of racial laws, skin color–based admissions and hiring, and today’s D-I-E discrimination that is classic segregation in all but name.  As Democrats continue their centuries-long quest to divide Americans by racial heritage, President Trump has earned higher support from non-white Americans than any Republican since Eisenhower.  Worried about Trump’s expanding appeal to voters of all colors and glimpsing their future irrelevancy, Democrats have been beating the “Trump is racist” drum for nearly ten years!

That’s where Crockett comes in.  Her chief contributions to public debate consist of (1) calling Trump and his voters “racist,” (2) comparing them to “Nazis,” and (3) explaining to like-minded TV hosts why non-white voters must get back on the Democrat plantation posthaste.  She does this in almost every interview.  An impartial observer might conclude that the congresswoman from Texas can remember only three talking points.  That’s probably good enough for CNN and MSNBC, but I’m not sure she can hate white people all the way to the White House.  As Ice Cube might say, “Bye, Felicia.”

It’s kind of hilarious that both Ocasio-Cortez and Crockett think Elon Musk is dumb.  Crockett says he’s an “idiot” who just “knows how to hire smart people.”  OC says, “This dude is probably one of the most unintelligent billionaires I have ever met or seen or witnessed.”  Yes, the richest man on Earth, the world’s pre-eminent tech innovator, and the twenty-first century’s real-life rocket-man who has singlehandedly resurrected space exploration is an absolute imbecile.  Felicia and “Alex from the Block” are the real geniuses!

It’s no secret that the Democrat party detests white men.  Democrats’ whole D-I-E shtick is literally a call to admit, hire, and promote everyone but heterosexual white guys.  So Crockett must be furious that Democrat donors are planning to support, in her words, “the safest white boy” in 2028.  You don’t think she’s talking about Eric Swalwell, do you?  You know, the guy who got a little too close to Chinese communist spy Fang Fang and suffers from flatulence when speaking on live TV?  Because Swalwell is not only one of the dumbest members of Congress, but also one of the dumbest Americans not to have a lucrative career in cable news.  He makes Crockett and Cortez (politicians or future stars of a bumbling buddy-cop show on TNT? — you decide) look like savants.

Maybe I’m giving Democrats too much credit when I assume that they’re looking for leaders with brains.  In 2020 and 2024, after all, they chose Dementia Joe Biden and Drunk Kamala as their nominees.  The “president’s” brain was so mushy that “journalists” had to hide him from the public each day, and the veep seemed so sauced for four years that her speeches consisted of the kind of slurring more common in a late-night cocktail lounge.

The Democrats’ confederacy of dunces all hate President Trump, though.  Surely that means something.

The Sparkling Story of the World-Famous ‘Smiling Angel

This medieval masterpiece of religious art and the witness of countless coronations of kings of France became the symbol of the Cathedral of Reims and one of the most widespread representations of angel in the world.

REIMS, France — The Cathedral of Our Lady of Reims, with its more than 2,000 sculptures, contains by far the most important statuary of the Gothic cathedrals in the world.

However, enthroned on the north portal of the main faΓ§ade of this jewel of medieval architecture, the one that is known as the Smiling Angel — or “St. Nicasius’ Angel” — catches in a special way the attention of the more than 1.5 million visitors every year. The story of this enigmatic smiling angel is indeed unique.

Built in the first half of the 13th century, together with the existing cathedral building, the angel was placed next to the statue of St. Nicasius, the bishop of Reims who was martyred in the fifth century. According to some historians, the angel once held a palm of martyrdom in his hand, which he symbolically handed over to St. Nicasius and which was destroyed by the passing of time.

With a large wingspan and wavy hair, right hand and leg suggesting movement, head slightly tilted and a peaceful smile turned toward visitors, the angel sculpture seems to have been designed to offer viewers a glimpse of the beauty and peace of the kingdom of God.

From an artistic point of view, this elegant and expressive angel emerged in France as a particularly original work for its time. Indeed, as Arnaud d’Hauterives, former perpetual secretary of the AcadΓ©mie des Beaux-Arts, pointed out in a 2005 speech, “The Smile in Art,” that smiles deserted Western and Christian art from the fifth century. “It was therefore necessary to wait for the ‘Cathedral of the Smile’ and this angel of Reims so miraculously preserved,” he said, adding that the Gothic sculpture of the 13th century, “symbolizing the reconciliation of man and God, incarnated for the redemption of suffering humanity, integrated an archaic aesthetic.”

Testimony of the Greatest Eras of France’s Christian History

From where it has stood throughout the centuries, the Angel of St. Nicasius has seen the generations pass by and has had an unobstructed view of the events that have irreversibly marked the history of France and Christendom.

This contemporary of king St. Louis has witnessed the coronation of all the kings of France (except Henry IV), between the 13th and the 19th century — the last coronation being that of Charles X, in 1825. In particular, the statue witnessed the coronation of King Charles VII, which represents the culmination of the epic of St. Joan of Arc, in July 1429. This coronation made possible by the “Maid of OrlΓ©ans” reversed the course of the Hundred Years’ War.

A total of 31 kings were crowned in the Cathedral of Reims, which remains one of the most important religious buildings in France. It is also there that St. Remy baptized Clovis I in 496, making him the first Christian king of France, thus initiating the great Christian history of the country, then called the “Eldest Daughter of the Church.”

Devastated by the First World War

Nevertheless, it was not until the First World War that the Smiling Angel gained the fame that we know today, especially since other smiling stone statues adorn the cathedral, in particular that of Gabriel the Archangel, located alongside a rendering of the Virgin Mary on the central portal, and which looks identical.

It was indeed its misfortune that made its face known to the world. As early as September 1914, the cathedral was the target of German bombing. Struck by a beam of a burning scaffolding, the angel was decapitated and its head broken into more than 20 pieces. Such an image of desolation, symbol of the suffering of the people of France devastated by the war, soon appeared on the front pages of newspapers across the planet.

Thanks to the intervention of a priest who meticulously collected the pieces of the mutilated statue, and with the help of a plaster cast of the statue kept at the MusΓ©e national des Monuments FranΓ§ais, the unfortunate angel would be entirely restored a few years after the end of the war, in 1926, under the guidance of Henri Deneux and Max Sainsaulieu. The original white and gold paint, erased by the ravages of time, has not been reproduced; the stone has been left in its raw state, like all the other stone statues of the monument.

“Carefully draped under his coat and confident in the beauty of its curls, it seems, wonder among so many wonders, to contemplate the future with serenity,” journalist Marc Blanc once wrote about the newly restored angel.

World Heritage

In the aftermath of the devastating world war, the statue became the cathedral’s emblem, as well as that of the city of Reims itself, attracting an ever-growing number of pilgrims and tourists.

With the city of Reims being the historic capital of champagne, how could its beloved angel, which contributed so much to its prestige in the world, not have a special vintage dedicated to crown its rebirth? This is how the Sourire de Reims brand of sparkling wine was born on the initiative of Henri AbelΓ©, owner of a champagne house and an important patron of the cathedral, who made it a great cuvΓ©e, whose bottles are adorned with an image of the famous angel’s luminous smile.

This precious treasure of the cathedral, which recently celebrated its 800th anniversary, was also included in the UNESCO World Heritage list toward the end of the 20th century.

The epic story of one of the most famous representations of our celestial companions inspired the following meditation by the former parish priest of the cathedral, Father Jean-Marie Guerlin:

“You, smiling angel,

messenger of God,

the stonecutters knew so well how to express on your face

the very smile of God,

to tell the passers who contemplate you

how much God loves them,

how close he is to them!

You, smiling angel,

you have braved all the destructions

to become in our midst

the sign of a joyful and persistent hope:

reconciliation between peoples!”
