More Lies: 10 Times Jake Tapper Helped Downplay Biden’s Decline

CNN media hack Jake Tapper is attempting to rewrite history by distancing himself from the left’s cover-up of Biden’s mental and physical decline.

On Tuesday, he spent a considerable time promoting his book, which he promises readers will blow the lid off the multi-year conspiracy to hide Biden’s decline.

Scott Jennings recently slammed liberal journalists trying to profit by exposing the lies they helped to propagate, for which Tapper takes the medal for being one of the most blatant.

“And now all the books are coming out, and it’s amazing because a lot of the people who were telling those lies are now going to get paid to write those books. It’s crazy.”

Despite his attempts to portray himself as an innocent bystander, Americans have yet to forget iconic moments when he tried to convince us that Biden was fit for office. Here are ten times that Tapper helped downplay Biden’s decline.

Tapper’s ballistic interview with Lara Trump.

One of the most memorable moments when Tapper attempted to cover Biden’s decline was when he hosted Lara Trump close to the 2020 presidential election. During the interview, he grilled the First Daughter over her previous description of Biden struggling to get the words out.

“I feel kind of sad for Joe Biden. I’m supposed to want him to fail at every turn, but every time he’s on stage and they turn to him I’m like, ‘Joe, can you get it out? Let’s get the words out, Joe.’” Lara had said.

“How do you think it makes little kids with stutters feel when they see you make a comment like that?” Tapper asked her.

However, Tapper went ballistic when Lara said she had no idea that Biden had a stutter and insisted that his incoherence was the result of mental decline.

“First and foremost, I had no idea that Joe Biden ever suffered from a stutter. I think what we see on stage with Joe Biden, Jake, is very clearly a cognitive decline,” Lara said.

“I think you have absolutely no standing to diagnose somebody’s cognitive decline,” Tapper lashed out. “I would think that somebody in the Trump family would be more sensitive to people who do not have medical licenses diagnosing politicians from afar.”

More stutter lies.

On March 21, 2024, during CNN’s The Lead, Tapper continued to push the false narrative and attack Donald Trump for mocking Biden’s cognitive decline.

“President Biden embraces his stutter, talking about it, while Trump mocks it, exaggerates it, belittles it.”

Trump had mocked Biden, saying, “Did you see him? He was stuttering through the whole thing.”

Biden is sharp mentally … physically, and Trump is only 3 years younger.

During CNN’s “Inside Look Into Joe Biden’s First Two Years As President,” Tapper insisted that the Democrat was sharp “mentally” before correcting himself and saying “physically.”

He also attacked Trump, saying he was just a few years younger than Biden.

“He’s sharp mentally… physically? I think the question is physically, right, more so? And the guy who is his chief opponent is only three or four years younger than him,” Tapper said.

Former Dem Rep. Dean Phillips’ interview.

Tapper also questioned former Minnesota Democratic U.S. Rep. Dean Phillips over remarks he made about Biden suggesting that the then-president was unfit for office.

“Do you worry that you damaged him at all?” Tapper asked.

Tapper also accused Rep. Phillips of saying nasty things about other Democrats, thus suggesting that the former lawmaker’s alleged remarks about Biden’s decline were inaccurate and malicious.

Tapper: Biden’s decline false.

During another CNN segment, Tapper said the Wall Street Journal’s remarks “about President Biden’s mental fitness and acuity” were false.

“…false claims to the Wall Street Journal, about President Biden’s mental fitness and acuity…,” Tapper said.

Adam Schiff interview.

When hosting Russian Collusion propagandist Adam Schiff, Tapper said Biden was 81, but his memory was “not horrible.”

“He’s 81, and his memory, you know, it doesn’t seem great; it’s not horrible, but I don’t understand the outrage,” he said.

Blame Russia!

Typical of the left, Tapper attempted to blame Russia for spreading fake news about Biden’s cognitive decline.

“The Russians are trying to do to make us and the public not trust our election integrity. Joe Biden has dementia, all this stuff.”

More WSJ outrage.

Tapper claimed that the WSJ story was filled with problems and characterized concerns about Biden’s mental acuity as a talking point by conservative media.

“The Wall Street Journal is owned by News Corp, which is run by the Murdochs,” Tapper said, adding that those concerns were “mostly based on observations of Republicans.”

Not incapable of doing the job.

In March 2024, Tapper also attacked Republicans for questioning Biden’s mental condition and calling him weak and senile.

“He certainly seemed like an 81-year-old, but he didn’t seem incapable of doing the job,” Tapper said after Biden’s State of the Union address.

Meanwhile, Tapper’s team continues to deny his role in the cover-up, saying he always questioned Biden’s health.

“From the campaign in 2020 to 2024 when he dropped out, Jake raised concerns about President Biden’s mental stamina on his shows, questioned Biden officials directly about his health on air, and consistently encouraged open discussion and debate on the issue,” a CNN spokesperson said.

Want to Understand the Modern Democrat Party? Look no Further than Apocalyptic Cults

Apocalyptic cults provide a window on some amazing complex group dynamics. First, of course is the "apocalyptic" part. This is what they are best known for -- the world is going to end next Tuesday or the aliens will be arriving the first of the month to take the chosen to space heaven, or a hundred other crazed ideas.

The cults preach that the only way to “escape this impending doom is by joining the group, adhering to its leader's teachings, and following its prescribed rituals.”

For the Democrat party, the most recent apocalyptic tale is of course the horrors of climate change. A few decades ago, it was the world was going to end in an overpopulated gigantic snowball and now it has gone 180° and the world is going to end in an underpopulated boiling desert.

Trump is like the gift that keeps giving in this area. Everything Trump does -- or even considers -- is a coming apocalypse that must be fought to save us all.

But regardless of the current impending doom, the Democrat party is the only solution to stave off the end of everything. Power, money, freedom, your children -- all must be granted to the government to save us.

As a side note, notice how it is always implicitly assumed they will be running this government for all time? I guess this is their not-so-subtle message that if they aren’t, the apocalypse will come and get us all. So vote D forever! At least if you want to live.

One of the most incredible features of apocalyptic cults is what happens to them when their prediction of doom -- or aliens -- doesn’t happen. When the world doesn’t end next Tuesday.

I think most rational people would guess that would be the end of the cult -- with members slinking off in self-disgust that they ever believed such claptrap and its leader(s) falling from grace, never to be heard from again.

Nope. Not remotely. When the prediction of doom doesn’t happen, they only become more certain of their cause! Being completely and utterly wrong only makes them believe even more!

They are impervious to facts. Impervious to feedback. Impervious to any and all things that don’t support their ideas. Feedback loops don’t work with these cults because there is no feedback possible -- just blind allegiance to the cult and its beliefs. Pesky facts that don’t conform to their thinking are simply ignored.

These failures will perhaps cause the loss of a few newer members who haven’t been fully indoctrinated, but for those who have a significant emotional commitment to the beliefs of the cult, it only makes them more certain of their righteousness.

This is a key feature of the Democrat party. Being wrong on a whole cornucopia of things doesn’t erode their belief in these things but only strengthens their emotional commitment to these provable bad ideas. This of course stops the cult from learning and adapting to feedback.  But it is what it is.

Look at the modern Democrat’s economic beliefs. Never in all human history have these ideas worked -- yet this only makes them believe in these ideas even more.

Apocalyptic cults also allow no disagreement -- not even discussion -- of non-cult ideas. Absolute loyalty is demanded and this conformity to cult doctrine is ruthlessly enforced.

Members must conform to strict rules, rituals, and beliefs. Always. This of course suppresses independent thought or questioning -- which is the goal. It’s about power and control for the leaders of the cult -- not actually accomplishing any other goal.

Again, this captures another key feature of the Democrat party. And for those who refuse to embrace this absolute conformity, a quick excommunication is certain to come. One sees and hears these actions every single day -- one just needs to put them in an apocalyptic cult’s framework and it all makes sense.

These cults also strongly encourage members to server ties with family and friends who do not share the cult’s beliefs. Again, this is shown every day out in the Democrat’s world. Being friends with a Trump supporter or sharing a single belief with a MAGA thinker is strictly verboten. Members must mentally and even physically distance themselves from all that isn’t cult.

The Democrat apocalyptic cult has one unique feature that again is put on display every single day. Single-issue zealots have learned that if they can somehow get the cult to support their idea/goal -- no matter how outlandish or insane -- it will be immediately backed by an army of non-thinking automatons. It will never be questioned, just obeyed. For a small, motivated group of zealots this is an opportunity that can’t be passed on.

A perfect example of this is the transgendered insanity that has swept the country.  Even just 10 years ago, very few people believed any of this. None of this is organic. Or scientific.

Now, supposedly rational Democrats don’t feel comfortable even saying what a female is. Now, the Democrat cult’s members must support young gay men being castrated and young lesbians being permanently mutilated. Most before they have had a single sexual experience with another person.

Insane. But if you look at it as an apocalyptic cult it makes perfect sense. The zealots must find a way to get the cult to embrace their idea and then it’s game-set-and-match for them. And of course, the cult leaders are primarily focused on keeping their positions of power so they will go whichever way the wind blows -- giving a small, highly motivated group of zealots the perfect means to hijack an entire “political” party. Where non-thinking conformity is ruthlessly demanded.

Many question the situation in which the modern Democrat party finds itself and whether it will be able to make necessary course corrections to remain a viable, nationwide political party. Once you understand the group dynamics as those of an apocalyptic cult, the answer to this is quite clear.

It’s not going to happen without a total and complete collapse of the cult. They will continue to bleed as members -- especially newer members who aren’t fully indoctrinated -- tire of the cult’s failed predictions while simultaneously demanding absolute conformity and submission to every insane idea.

The demise of every single apocalyptic cult is built into the very fabric of the cult itself.  Until the Democrats can become a dynamic political party rather than a stagnant apocalyptic cult they will continue to self-destruct.

Democrats Think People Miss Kamala

If you don’t hear from a politician for a while you can tend to forget they exist. That’s a good thing, your life is better without some blowhard lying to you as a job. That’s why the world is a better place with Joe Biden and Kamala Harris gone. Well, not completely gone.

Joe is, as best anyone with about 7.3 percent of their brain left functioning he can, trying to rehabilitate his image and distract from the destruction he caused. But we remember. His reemergence has worried Democrats – it’s like having an affair with your neighbor, even if it’s over your spouse has the constant reminder checking the mail every day. No one wants that.

Kamala was different, at least for a while. She went away, losing brings a demoralizing feeling and you just want to get away for a while. Her name was always floating around, but it was invoked a lot more than she said anything.

But she’s now given a speech – a pathetic one in which she whined about Trump – but it was forgotten before it was finished.

The fundraising machine she has – and it was a machine, having raised more than a billion dollars – still operated without her, money has a funny way of doing that.

Now she’s back. And Democrats seem to think she was missed, why else do it?

But they also seem to think people want her to run again, at least for something.

When it comes to fundraising emails, the biggest part of the battle is to get people to open it. That’s where the subject line comes from, and why they’re usually crazy or extreme, so you want to see what’s inside. Kamala’s subject line read, “My decision.”

The implication there is clearly that she’s going to let donors know if she’s running again or running for Governor of California. Like everything else about her (and Democrats), however, it was a lie. Her email was just a naked money grab.

“While I've tried not to personally send a ton of fundraising emails since the last election,” it opens, “I want to take a few minutes to tell you about how I've decided to approach this moment in time and why your support is so important in this struggle.  Here is the truth:  Some people are describing what’s been happening in recent months as absolute chaos. And of course, I understand why.”

Nothing about a “decision” at all. In fact, there isn’t anything about one in the whole email.

Instead, she continues, “It’s certainly true with those tariffs. Tariffs that — as I predicted — are clearly inviting a recession. But Derek, please, let us not be duped into thinking everything is chaos.  What we are witnessing is a swift implementation of an agenda that has been decades in the making.  An agenda to slash public education, to shrink government and privatize its services, all while giving tax breaks to the wealthiest among us.”

That agenda sounds pretty awesome, actually.

“I know a lot of folks are wondering what’s going to guide us through this moment... How are we all going to chart the course?” Get ready for the vapid, as she continued, “There is only one answer — and that is together. Everyone doing whatever it is they can: volunteering, organizing in your community, running for office, and more...”

“Together”? How inspiring, let me get my wallet.

Along that line, here comes the pitch. “But donations are critical too. Especially to the Democratic National Committee. They are leading so much of the good work being done to fight back against this administration's agenda and to elect a Democratic House and Senate. So please:  Make a contribution to the Democratic Party today. Make it a generous one — $5 or more if you can afford it. But the point is that lots of donations will add up fast when we're in this together.”

That’s it, that’s the message. Nothing about a decision, we have no idea what, if anything, she’s going to do next. Honestly, if I thought it would get her to run, I’d toss $5 her way.

It ends, “Thank you for reading this message and for doing what you can to help fight back.” She’s rich, as is her husband. Sure, he’s had to pay at least one mistress a wad of cash in the past (those things can add up), but they’re still sitting on a lot of money. They just want yours.

And some people will give it to them. Suckers.

Democrats Show Their True Colors

You’ve got to admire the Democrat Party’s innovative plan to center its ideology around contempt for America’s largest ethnic group. If nothing else, the last week or so has demonstrated that the key sacrament of the Democrats has stopped being the murder of little babies and has become the hatred of white people. Since somewhere between 60% and 70% of Americans identify as “white” – the notion of “white” is, like most ethnic categories, ambiguous and ultimately silly – this is, as the kids say, a bold strategy. Let’s see how it works out.

I’m betting it works out poorly.

But I am biased because I’ve seen up close and personal, the consequences of what happens when a major faction elevates ethnicity over unity and tries to leverage it for short-term political advantage. I served in the Balkans. You know, the place where the term “Balkanization” came from? Our job was to keep Ethnic Group A from murdering Ethnic Group B and vice versa, and to keep both of them from murdering Ethnic Group C. That’s the natural state of man throughout history. A significant portion of history is the story of ethnic groups killing each other. America is an exception. It is a good exception. But our ruling class is too stupid, corrupt, narcissistic, arrogant, and historically illiterate to appreciate that.

One of the greatest achievements of the United States of America was to make its ethnic majority not think of itself as an ethnicity. Look, I’m so white I make Mitt Romney look ethnic, but like almost everybody except for weird outliers who most of us never encountered in our daily lives, when I was coming up in the 70s, 80s, and up through the 90s, if you had asked me or most other people of pallor “What are you?” I would have replied, “American.” And if you had pressed me and asked, “No, I mean what are you?” I would’ve answered “American” again. And if you had asked me a third time, I would’ve told you to get the hell away from me, cranked up the Replacements cassette playing on my Walkman, and left.

This was America’s greatest strength. Its biggest ethnic group didn’t think of itself as an ethnic group. That meant just 40 years ago, our country generally, not always but mostly, did not think of everything in ethnic terms. This amazing innovation was unknown in human history, a nation where tribalism was secondary to ideology. And that ideology was the awesomeness of America.

But, of course, leftists don’t believe in the awesomeness of America. They hate America in general, and they hate white people in particular. Of course, many leftists are white people, but they’re different white people – at least in their own minds. They’re not like “those kinds of white people,” the ones who go to church, fight our wars, and know which bathroom to use. They’re the good kind of white people, the college professors, the HR directors, the HOA board members, the wine women with signs out front that read, “Hate has no home here,” with a little asterisk that indicates a footnote reading “Except for white people. They are the worst.”

Last week provided us with several examples of their pathological hatred of white people. They collectively wet themselves when 60 Afrikaners escaped South Africa’s psychotic, communist race government and came here as refugees. The left was breathlessly angry that these people escaped the nightmare they were enduring; few appeared to have been adults when apartheid went away. It was interesting to see the left finally find some asylum seekers it didn’t orgasm over; coincidentally, these were actual asylum seekers and not just a bunch of Third World peasants trying to escape the poverty their own culture had inflicted upon itself. Donald Trump once again executed his amazing capacity to show the moral bankruptcy of his opponents by causing them to publicly freak out at the thought of white people immigrating, while at the same time illustrating the true nature of the race communist sociopaths now running South Africa. Understand that the left would be delighted to have a similar race communist government here, executing the same kind of pogroms against American white people, assuming they could somehow convince us to disarm ourselves.

With the left, what’s old is always new again. We’re back to the ancient notion of corruption of blood, where individuals bear the alleged sins of their forefathers. If your skin is pale, you carry the responsibility for every wrong ever committed by anyone of pallor. Of course, we have that here, too, just with less bloodshed at the moment. That’s what the reparations idiocy is about. People who never owned slaves supposedly owe some sort of debt to people who never were slaves. And then there’s the hatred of “whiteness,” which the race hustlers contend consists of such characteristics as punctuality, logic, rationality, and achievement. Somehow, these are supposed to be bad things. Actual white supremacists and leftists apparently agree that white people are amazing.

The Episcopal Church, which is out to welcome every illegal alien that wades across the Rio Grande with a fake asylum claim, literally refuses to take any more government money because it would have to settle the Afrikaners. Remember that hideous woman who looks like every leftist minister ever who lectured Trump and JD Vance about Muh Refugees? That’s her church. That’s her thing. She hates white people. I missed that part of the Bible, but in fairness, the Gospel has nothing to do with these pagan Democrat denominations.

And then Harvard, our formerly most prestigious college, suffered the leak of one of its hiring guides, which essentially said, “Don’t hire white people.” You can be assured that every other major college has such a policy; however, it’s unlikely any of them were stupid/arrogant enough to put it in writing. This is of a kind with the corporate trend toward not hiring white people. This basically means that white Americans are the subject of a deliberate and conscious effort to keep them from opportunities, jobs, and the ability to succeed at the highest levels of society, all because of the color of their skin. It’s not because of anything they did. It’s simply because of their race.

Now, you might think this is racism, and you’d be right because you’re not an idiot. The other side doesn’t like you using the word “racist” because, well, that’s their word. They solved the hypocrisy problem by simply defining “racism” as not including racism when it comes to whites. It’s a nice trick, if you accept it.

But we’re not accepting it. We’re fighting back. Trump is one manifestation of it. Imagine, even five years ago, Donald Trump’s Department of Justice standing up and confronting head-on the issue of anti-white racism. That’s what it’s doing. And the head of the Civil Rights Division, ironically, is not a European-American. Harmeet K. Dhillon could have skated to success based on her ethnicity but instead succeeded by being awesome. Now, she is at the vanguard of this campaign to restore the basic American principle of color blindness. Full Disclosure: Harmeet is an incredible lawyer, and when we were both in private practice, I referred civil rights cases to her. And she won them.

It’s good that we’re now talking about this. We’ve been told for years by leftists how we need to have “a conversation about race” in America, and, well, here you go. We’re having it now. Enjoy. The bottom line is that no one is going to be limited, discriminated against, abused, neglected, or insulted because of where our grandparents came from, and that includes white people. Leftists might not like white people. They are free to be idiots and morally illiterate because thinking evil, dumb things is in the Constitution. But they don’t get to use power against people because of their race. They don’t get to discriminate against whites. They don’t get to hassle whites. They don’t get to exclude whites. They thought they could get away by creating a social paradigm where you can’t raise objections to anti-white racism. Well, white people aren’t going to play that. You can’t tell somebody that the only thing that matters about them is that they are a member of a particular ethnic group, and not expect them to band together with other members of that ethnic group and allies to use their own power to fight back. In response, leftists are free to literally shake as they call white people “racist” even harder than before; no one cares.

It might get ugly. Some people will respond to prejudice against them with prejudice of their own. That’s dumb. We know the right answer; we had it in our grasp until about the time Obama and his race lunatic allies showed up. There’s still time before America becomes fully Balkanized, where we can turn back around and once again, embrace the common sense and morally correct notion of color blindness. I strongly urge this, but I’m concerned because the left is composed of ahistorical halfwits who have made the wrong choice about every major question for the last century since the election of fellow traveler/fellow race fanatic Woodrow Wilson. Their actions will keep pushing the majority of Americans to stop identifying as Americans and, as a matter of self-preservation, to embrace their ethnicity. The leftists are seeking to destroy one of America’s greatest achievements. We need to stop them. I don’t want to be a white person. I want to be an American, and so should everybody else.

France to open high-security prison in Amazon jungle

France will build a new high-security prison in its overseas territory of French Guiana to house drug traffickers and radical Islamists, the country's justice minister announced during a visit to the territory.

Gérald Darmanin told Le Journal du Dimanche (JDD) newspaper that the prison would target organised crime "at all levels" of the drug supply chain.

The €400m (£337m) facility, which could open as early as 2028, will be built in an isolated location deep in the Amazon jungle in the northwestern region of Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni.

The plan was announced after a series of violent incidents linked to criminal gangs which saw prisons and staff targeted across France in recent months.

The prison will hold up to 500 people, with a separate wing designed to house the most dangerous criminals.

In an interview with JDD, the minister said the new prison would be governed by an "extremely strict carceral regime" designed to "incapacitate the most dangerous drug traffickers".

Darmanin said the facility would be used to detain people "at the beginning of the drug trail", as well as serving as a "lasting means of removing the heads of the drug trafficking networks" in mainland France.

French Guiana is a region of France on the north-east coast of South America. Its residents are eligible to vote in French elections and have access to the French social security system, as well as other subsidies.

Its distance from the French mainland means drug lords "will no longer be able to have any contact with their criminal networks", Darmanin told JDD.

French authorities have long struggled to control the infiltration of mobile phones into the prison network. Tens of thousands are known to circulate through French jails

Earlier this year, the French government announced new legislation designed to crack down on the activity of criminal gangs.

The measures will create a dedicated branch of the prosecutors' office to deal with organised crime. It will also introduce extra powers for investigators, and a special protected status for informers.

It will also see the creation of new high-security prisons - including the facility in French Guiana - to hold the most powerful drugs barons, with stricter rules governing visits and communication with the outside world.

France has seen a series of attacks on prisons in recent months, which Darmanin has described as "terrorist" incidents that come in response to the government's new legislation.

The perpetrators of these attacks have set vehicles outside prisons alight, while Toulon's La Farlede prison was hit by gunfire.

In some incidents the perpetrators of these attacks have styled themselves as defenders of prisoners' rights.

The proposed new facility in French Guiana is to be built at a "strategic crossroads" for drugs mules, particularly from Brazil and Suriname, according to AFP news agency.

Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni is the former port of entry to the infamous Devil's Island penal colony, where 70,000 convicts from mainland France were sent between 1852 and 1954.

The penal colony was the setting of French writer Henri Charrière's book Papillon, which was later made into a Hollywood film starring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman.

The BBC has contacted the French justice ministry for comment.

Mike Pence Rules Out Presidential Run: 'I Don't See That in My Future.' Neither Does Anyone Else.

Ward Clark reporting for RedState

Some people just seem to try to extend their relevance long past... well, relevance. Like, say, Mike Pence, who in an interview Sunday with NBC "Meet the Press" host Kristen Welker, was asked if he was planning to run for president again. Mr. Pence's response acknowledges reality, that being that the only national contest he might stand a chance of winning would be an "Older Race Bannon Lookalike" contest.

At least the former VP seems to recognize that.

Former Vice President Mike Pence doesn’t expect to attempt a grand political comeback and likely won’t ever run for the White House again, he said in an interview that aired on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday.

“I don’t see that in my future,” the former Indiana governor told NBC’s Kristen Welker. “I don’t see it, but we’ll keep standing for everything we’ve always stood for, and we’ll let the future take care of itself.”

So, he doesn't see that (running for president) in his future; that's just as well, because nobody else does, either. Instead, he has launched another think-tank in a long, long list of tiresome Washington think tanks, many of which involve very little actual thinking.

Pence, 65, said he would like to continue to play a role in conservative policy, though he offered no direct insight into what that may look like. He launched the Advancing American Freedom conservative think tank in 2021, and he sought the GOP presidential nomination last year but gained little momentum among voters.

“I want to be a voice for conservative values. I want to be a voice for the policies and liberties enshrined in the Constitution of the United States,” Pence told Welker. “I want to be a champion of the conservative cause, and that’s where I’ll stay focused, and we’ll let the future take care of itself.”

Now, on the surface, those sound like noble goals. But does anyone see any scenario where Mike Pence could emerge as a presidential frontrunner in the next two or three presidential election cycles? He's 65 now. In 2028, he'll be 67, which isn't at all too old, but let's be honest, barring some catastrophe, the smart money will be on JD Vance to be advanced to the top spot. In 2032, if Vice President Vance runs and wins in 2028, he'll be campaigning for a second term, and Pence will be 71. In 2036? Pence will be 75.

Even if JD Vance opts out, there are plenty of younger, more impressive Republicans that could run. Mike Pence is, literally, yesterday's news. He's also not charismatic, he's not appealing; as vice president, he was... there.

As a politician, Mike Pence is distinctly underwhelming.

Pence to Receive JFK Profile in Courage Award for 'Putting His Life on the Line'

So, the former VP has presented us with a classic case of "belaboring the obvious." He's not going to be running for anything and probably won't even try. That's just as well. Mike Pence will never have to worry where his next meal is coming from; as a former VP, he can certainly hit the paid-speaker circuit, where many an out-to-pasture pol earns his daily salt. Maybe the Bulwark would have him in for a talk.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent Debriefs on Current Trade Deals

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent appears on NBC Meet the Press to discuss the current status of the trade negotiations, tariffs and pending trade deals. In addition, Secretary Bessent outlines the construct of President Trump’s tax proposals and the intended benefits therein to middle-class working Americans.  WATCH (Transcript Below)

[Transcript] KRISTEN WELKER: Welcome back. There are new economic warnings after the credit ratings agency, Moody’s, downgraded the United States’ credit rating one notch from its AAA rating. Moody’s citing concerns over the nation’s rising debt. It comes as President Trump’s tax bill suffered a setback in Congress this past week. Joining me now is Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Secretary Bessent, welcome back to Meet the Press.

SEC. SCOTT BESSENT: Kristen, good to see you. Thanks for having me on.

KRISTEN WELKER: It’s wonderful to have you on after a long foreign trip. Thank you for being here. Let’s start right there with Moody’s downgrading the nation’s credit rating. And they do cite the debt. I want to read you a little bit of what Moody’s says. It says, quote, “If the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act is extended, which is our base case, it will add around $4 trillion to the deficit over the next decade.” Several Republicans, Mr. Secretary, are citing similar concerns. Does the president’s tax bill need to do more to address the nation’s debt and deficit?

SEC. SCOTT BESSENT: Well, Kristen, first – first of all, I – I think that Moody’s is a lagging indicator. I think that’s what everyone thinks of credit agencies. Larry Summers and I don’t agree on everything, but he said that’s when they – they downgraded the U.S. in 2011. So it’s – it’s a lagging indicator. And just like Sean Duffy said with our air traffic control system, we didn’t get here in the – in the past 100 days. It’s the Biden administration and the spending that we have – have seen over the past four years. We inherited 6.7% deficit to GDP, the highest when we weren’t in a recession, not in a war. And we are determined to bring the spending down and grow the economy.

KRISTEN WELKER:

Fair enough. But under President Trump’s first administration he added $8 trillion to the nation’s debt in his first term. So there’s plenty of blame to go around. Let me –

SEC. SCOTT BESSENT:

No, no, no, no, no. But let’s review. We were in the rescue portion of Covid. The Biden – the Biden administration was in the recovery portion. And Kristen, it would’ve been if not for Senators Manchin and Sinema, who are no longer the – in the Democratic caucus, that it would’ve been $4 trillion or $5 trillion more.

KRISTEN WELKER:

It did include the – the tax cuts as well. But let me ask you about Walmart, this big news from Walmart. It says it will start raising prices on its consumers, Mr. Secretary, as early as this month due to the tariffs. Now, President Trump out with a very stern warning on social media saying Walmart, quote, “should eat the tariffs,” adding the company made far more than expected last year. Is the president asking American companies to be less profitable?

SEC. SCOTT BESSENT:

I – I was on the phone with Doug McMillon, the CEO of Walmart, yesterday. And Walmart is in fact, going to, as you describe it, eat some of the tariffs, that – just as they did in ’18, ’19, and ’20. The other thing, though, that we are seeing that Doug passed along to me, that with their consumers, the single most important thing is the gasoline price. Gasoline prices have collapsed under President Trump. So we – we are seeing that. The other thing that will happen, that is a direct tax cut for consumers. Then the transportation costs are also a big input. So let’s see what happens. What you’re describing was Walmart’s earnings call. The other thing the companies have to do, they have to give the worst case scenario so that they’re not sued. So you know, I – I think overall we are seeing a decline in services, inflation, and I – and we saw inflation come down for the first time in four years.

KRISTEN WELKER:

Well, you know, in my conversation with former Vice President Mike Pence, he says he sees tariffs as a tax. How far, Mr. Secretary, is the president, is the administration willing to go to prevent CEOs from increasing prices?

SEC. SCOTT BESSENT:

Well, I – I think what we are hearing here is tax – people are saying tax increases are inflationary that – when I was testifying before Congress last week, one of the congressmen said that. And I said, “Well, Congressman, if taxes are inflationary, let’s cut taxes.” So let’s get this tax bill done, bring down taxes, which according to this line of thinking, should be disinflationary.

KRISTEN WELKER:

But the Federal Reserve has said that tariffs are inflationary. Just to be very clear, you said you called Walmart. Is that what CEOs can expect, that you, that the president, that other members of the administration will apply pressure to try to prevent them from passing on these prices to CEOs?

SEC. SCOTT BESSENT:

I – I didn’t apply any pressure. The – the – Doug and I have a very good relationship, so I just wanted to hear it from him rather than – than second, third-hand from the press. And again, as I said, this is all from their earnings call. And on an earnings call, you have to give the – the worst case scenario. Kristen, to go back to what you said, the Federal Reserve is not saying that tariffs will cause inflation. They’re saying they’re not sure, and that they’re in wait and see mode.

KRISTEN WELKER:

Let’s talk about the other big news that you were a part of a week ago in Switzerland, negotiating with China’s officials. You and the administration lowered tariffs from the high rate of 145% to 30% for 90 days, to allow talks to continue. But President Trump had said previously, and I’m quoting from him, “China needs to make a deal with the U.S. We don’t have to make a deal with them.” So why did the United States back down?

SEC. SCOTT BESSENT:

Neither side backed down. Both sides realized that this, as I had said, the – was unsustainable. So we had the equivalent of an embargo, which is not what either side wanted. You know, it was this constant tit-for-tat escalation. So both sides brought the tariffs down by 115%. So for 2025, we have increased tariffs on China by 30%, they have increased them by 10% on us. We now have a mechanism in place to continue talks.

KRISTEN WELKER:

Okay. On Friday, as a piece of this, President Trump, while he was on the foreign trip, said that countries should expect letters from you, from Secretary Lutnick, saying this is what the tariff rate is going to be. Mr. Secretary, does that effectively mean that these negotiations with other countries are over? And how high should they expect tariffs to go? Above 10%?

SEC. SCOTT BESSENT:

This means that they’re not negotiating in good faith. They are going to get a letter the – saying, “Here – here is the rate.” So I would expect that everyone would come and negotiate in good faith.

KRISTEN WELKER:

You expect that rate, though, that you would slap on any country that you think is not negotiating in good faith to be above 10%?

SEC. SCOTT BESSENT:

Well, I think that it would be the April 2nd level. Some countries were at 10%, some were substantially higher. And the negotiating leverage that President Trump is talking about here is if you don’t want to negotiate then it will spring back to the April 2nd level.

KRISTEN WELKER:

I have to ask you about the war in Ukraine. President Trump saying he is going to speak with President Zelensky and Putin on Monday. Former Vice President Pence told me, “It is time to impose harsh sanctions now.” What say you, Mr. Secretary: is it time to impose sanctions against Russia?

SEC. SCOTT BESSENT:

Well, I think we will see the – what happens when both sides get to the table. President Trump has made it very clear that if President Putin does not negotiate in good faith that the United States will not hesitate to up the Russia sanctions along with our European partners. What I can tell you is the sanctions were very ineffective during the Biden administration because they kept them low because they were afraid of pushing up domestic oil prices.

KRISTEN WELKER:

Very quickly, how long for the timeline until you move to sanctions? Obviously there’s a call. But if the president doesn’t feel like there’s progress how much time is he going to give them?

SEC. SCOTT BESSENT:

I – I – look, I – I’m not going to tie the president’s hands in his negotiations.

KRISTEN WELKER:

Let me ask you, former Vice President Mike Pence echoed several of President Trump’s, quite frankly, own allies in expressing concerns about this plane that Qatar has offered to President Trump. They are saying it sends the wrong message. It sends the wrong message and raises concerns ethically, raises concerns constitutionally and about security. Why is it appropriate for the president to accept a $400 million jet from Qatar?

SEC. SCOTT BESSENT:

Well, it’s not the president accepting it, it would be the United States government. And Senator Mullin said this weekend that the talks had actually begun under the Biden administration. So – but Kristen, what I can tell you is I think this is an off-ramp for many in the media not to acknowledge what an incredible trip this was. You know, President Trump has brought back trillions of investments in the United States. Every stop we made, the – the enthusiasm in – in Saudi Arabia, in Qatar, in the United Arab – Arab Emirates to invest in the United States that they want to push more and more, they have funds here. And if we go back to your initial question on the Moody’s downgrade, who cares? Qatar doesn’t. Saudi doesn’t. UAE doesn’t. They’re all pushing money in. They’ve made ten-year investment plans. So this administration, we’re doing peace deals, trade deals and tax deals.

KRISTEN WELKER:

And just very, very quickly, President Trump has said he plans to keep that plane in his presidential library after. But what do you say to some Republicans who argue it sends a message that the United States can be bought, or that other countries can curry favor if they offer gifts?

SEC. SCOTT BESSENT: I say that the gifts are to the American people. These trillions of dollars of investments that are going to create jobs in the U.S., whether it’s the UAE building this gigantic aluminum plant in Oklahoma, whether it’s these data centers that Qatar is going to do, is $600 billion on its way to $1 trillion from Saudi, it all accrues to the American people.

KRISTEN WELKER:

All right, Secretary Bessent, I know you’ve had a long week traveling with the president. Thank you so much for being here. We really appreciate it.

SEC. SCOTT BESSENT:

Good to see you.
