A British security guard was among two crew members killed in what a UK source described as a suspected drone attack on an Israeli-linked oil tanker off Oman.
There has not been any official confirmation about what happened to the Mercer Street vessel, which is managed by a British company, and no one has claimed responsibility.
The UK source said that the crew had reported being targeted by "some sort of drone" on Thursday in the Arabian Sea before communications with the ship were lost.
If a drone attack is confirmed it would raise speculation about a possible link to a government or some kind of proxy group.
Iran in the past has repeatedly been accused of targeting tankers in the Gulf.
The country has been locked in a tit-for-tat contest with arch-rival Israel, with both sides accusing the other of targeting ships and launching cyber attacks.
Zodiac Maritime, the UK firm that manages the vessel, is part of Israeli billionaire Eyal Ofer's Zodiac Group.
It said "details of the incident are still being established and an investigation … is currently underway".
The tanker was on the move again, under the control of its crew, with a US naval escort to a safe location, Zodiac Maritime added, without specifying where it was headed.
The British national who was killed was working for the UK maritime security company Ambrey. The other fatality was a Romanian crew member.
A British government spokesman said: Our thoughts are with the loved ones of a British National who has died…
Vessels must be allowed to navigate freely in accordance with international law. We are working with our international partners to urgently establish the facts."
In a sign of the gravity of the situation, it is understood that Dominic Raab, the foreign secretary, is receiving regular updates.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UK MTO) - a part of the Ministry of Defence, which provides maritime security information - said what took place was a "non-piracy incident".
The Mercer Street tanker is Japanese owned but was sailing with a Liberian flag.
Concerns about a threat to tankers from Iran, following a spate of attacks in 2019, prompted the UK and its allies to send more warships to the Gulf to better protect the vital waterway.
The UK MTO said the vessel was about 152 nautical miles (280 km) northeast of the Omani port of Duqm when it was attacked on Thursday.
It gave no more details on the type of vessel, any cargo, to whom it belonged or about possible casualties.
Zodiac Maritime said in a statement: "We can confirm that there has been a suspected piracy incident onboard the product tanker M/T Mercer Street.
"The ship is a Japanese owned vessel managed by our UK based Zodiac Maritime Office. At the time of the incident, the vessel was in the northern Indian Ocean, travelling from Dar es Salaam to Fujairah with no cargo on board.
"We are in coordination and liaising with the UK MTO and other relevant authorities."
A spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence said: "We are aware of reports of an attack on a merchant vessel off the coast of Oman. UK military headquarters in the region are currently conducting investigations."
According to Eikon's ship tracking, the Mercer Street was headed to Fujairah, a bunkering port and oil terminal in the United Arab Emirates, from Dar es Salaam, in Tanzania.

Yesterday, the installed occupant of the White House announced that all federal workers will be required to undergo vaccinations against COVID-19 or subject themselves to weekly tests to prove their health status. Going a step further, the administration announced all private contractors for the federal government will be held to the same standard as federal employees. [Video Link]
“Every federal government employee will be asked to attest to their vaccination status. Anyone who does not attest, or is not vaccinated, will be required to mask no matter where they work, test one or two times a week to see if they have acquired COVID, socially distance, and generally will not be allowed to travel for work.
Likewise, today, I am directing my administration to take steps to apply similar standards to all federal contractors. If you want to do business with the federal government get your workers vaccinated.”
Joe Biden was visibly unsettled -straining to keep his focus in place- as he read from the carefully prepared script on the teleprompter. During the questioning following the prepared comments Biden said, “If in fact you are unvaccinated, you present a problem to yourself, to your family and to those with whom you work”. These comments highlight his intent to apply as much federal pressure as possible to force vaccinations.
When asked about why not just federally mandate forced vaccinations of Americans, Joe Biden said the DOJ was still looking into the legality of whether or not that is possible. When asked about the federal government requiring proof of vaccination, Biden said he anticipates more businesses requiring vaccinations, and proof of vaccination.
Another tell that forced and mandated federal vaccinations are likely, was Biden’s answer to when the federal government will no longer define the vaccine as under “temporary approval” or emergency use authorization. Biden’s response indicated the federal mandate will follow that shift in definition, and he anticipates that change to happen in the “early fall” of this year.
When Biden left the podium, Fox News journalist Peter Doocy asked about Biden’s contradictory statements around mask mandates, noting the earlier comments by Biden that vaccinated individuals did not need to wear masks. Biden became visibly angry – WATCH:
This is the dangerous inflection moment, when the White House is trying to sell a narrative filled with contradictions. They are visibly becoming unstable because the fraudulent messaging -unsupported by actual science- is filled with double-speak, lies and hypocrisy.
When a Democrat is cornered on an actual policy outcome that is a complete lie from their claims during the policy introduction, things get ugly. Democrats get violent. Democrats trigger distractions in an effort to avoid the sunlight upon their fraud.
You can keep your doctor… until you can’t. You can keep your plan…. until you can’t. You don’t need a mask…. until you do. If you take the vaccine you don’t need a mask… until you do. The vaccinations are safe…. until they are not.
Tell the lie, get a different outcome…. distract and avoid. Inside that need to distract – Democrats do dangerous things.

As the forever war fades, the war to live forever—to live wrapped in the linens of the dead—enters the forefront. That this is no way to live is beside the point, because too many of our fellow citizens elect to dress a certain way; they elect politicians who want everyone to dress the same way: masked and separated, and segregated too, so as to distinguish the smart from the selfish, the healthy from the hateful, the believers from the deniers.
That this is how we live now, assigning blame with no cause save opposition to a cause, sacrificing liberty on behalf of science. This is why the price of immortality is eternal submission. We cannot go on living this way, in a purgatory of our own making, just because someone, somewhere, may contract or spread COVID-19.
That people choose to live this way is not proof that a majority of people support this lifestyle. As a lifestyle, few people choose to look penitent while advertising their pain; few choose to trade comfort for the coveralls of a clean room, so they may recite from the catechism of a false religion, “Trust the science.” But enough people believe in the inerrancy of faith, enough people share the same faith, that they do not see the irony of praising a belief system that takes nothing on faith. What the faithful call science is a cult by any other name.
What other faith accepts testimony to Congress as testimony of the spirit of prophecy? What other faith treats the testimony of a man in himself as testimony of a miracle? What other faith tasks a man with investigating himself, proclaiming his testimony true and holy?
About these questions, let there be no question that all other faiths have no faith in Dr. Anthony Fauci. About Dr. Fauci’s ability to tell the truth, we should question the truth of his statement about time. We should question whether he can even tell time, as we pass the 500th day of his 15-day plan to slow the spread of COVID-19.
We should also question whether he is true to the oath of his profession, whether he knows he has a duty to say, “I know not,” since he acts like a know-it-all. We should question why this man retains the power to act, when the secretary of Health and Human Services has the power to fire Fauci.
If the secretary fails to fire Fauci for want of cause, if the secretary wants to find cause to fire Fauci, he should review the seventh leading cause of death in this country. He should look at how many Americans (342) per day die from COVID-19. And while correlation does not imply causation, it is hard not to infer that Fauci bears some degree of responsibility for this catastrophe.
That he refuses to take responsibility for the consequences of his actions, that he refuses to retract his testimony in response to questions about his actions, testifying in such a way that the transcript is as unintelligible as a doctor’s handwriting, is testimony of his refusal to relinquish power.
As his reasons shift and his recommendations change, expect Fauci to issue new suggestions. Expect him to suggest, or expect that his allies will suggest, that the least vulnerable to COVID-19 are the most favorable candidates for vaccination from COVID-19. When he comes to save our children, there will be no one left to speak for him.
